Can anybody stop Max Verstappen in 2023?

The likes of Mercedes and Ferrari have been way off the pace this term, with household names such as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc enduring well-publicised struggles. Throw in a lack of competition at the bottom of the grid too, meaning the general feeling of blah surrounding the campaign is resonating.

However, with almost half of the season to go, the formality of Verstappen winning the 2023 F1 title does pose a question or two about the capabilities of some other drivers on the grid and whether they could at least pose some sort of challenge this term.

Despite a lack of serious stories and narratives surrounding the 2023 F1 season, the reappearance of Fernando Alonso on podiums this term has been a story to tell. The veteran Spaniard has been hugely impressive for Alpine this season and he still looks more than capable of mixing it with the big boys.

Meanwhile, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has endured some tough moments at Mercedes over the past couple of seasons, but his driving prowess remains as visible as ever and the British driving legend will want to give Verstappen the hurry up where possible.

British Formula 1 racing does look to be in a good place following the Lewis Hamilton generation and George Russell and Lando Norris have been a huge part of that. Racing for Mercedes and McLaren respectively, both Russell and Norris have shown glimpses of their potential in the 2023 season.

Whilst seeing either Russell or Norris sustain a challenge throughout the campaign does seem a little unrealistic, both players will be desperate to keep getting into good positions in races and learn from their experiences for races moving forwards.

Remarkably, the only other driver on the Formula 1 grid to have won a race during the 2023 season is Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team mate, Sergio Perez. The enigmatic Mexican has long been one of the most exciting talents in the sport and is finally fulfilling his potential at Red Bull.

Verstappen does remain the number one priority with the team and the Dutchman is protected in every race he goes into, but Sergio Perez is ready to push him all the way, should he be given the opportunity to do so.

The 2023 F1 season does have a sense of formality, with Max Verstappen on the brink of another title win but there are plenty of drivers who will be looking to keep pace, as the remainder of the campaign pans out.
