The Cadillac Formula 1 Team has confirmed that its inaugural chassis will carry the designation MAC-26, short for Mario Andretti Cadillac 26, as a tribute to 1978 F1 World Champion Mario Andretti.

The announcement comes on the eve of Andretti’s 86th birthday on February 28 and marks a symbolic moment ahead of the American outfit’s long awaited entry into Formula 1.
The naming of the chassis formally links the team’s first car to one of the sport’s most iconic figures, reinforcing the organisation’s ambition as it prepares to take to the grid for the first time.

The MAC-26 designation is intended to reflect Andretti’s competitive legacy while establishing the benchmark the team aims to follow in its debut campaign. Cadillac has positioned the tribute as both a recognition of history and a declaration of intent.
Dan Towriss, CEO of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team Holdings, said: “Naming our first chassis MAC-26 reflects the spirit Mario carried into Formula 1 and the belief that an American team belongs on this stage. His story embodies the American dream and inspires how we approach building this team every day.”
Team Principal Graeme Lowdon added: “Mario Andretti is a legend of Formula 1. A true racer who knows how to win and push the limits of what is possible. But more than that, he is an incredible man with a gentle heart who believes in everyone’s ability to shape their own path.
"At the start of my own journey with the team, he asked me not to let him down – I hope that he will be proud to see the Cadillac Formula 1 Team car bearing his name finally take to the grid.”

Andretti’s lasting bond with F1

Andretti, whose 1978 Drivers’ Championship remains the most recent title won by an American in Formula 1, described the gesture as deeply personal.
“Racing has been the joy of my life," he said. "It is the ultimate compliment that the Cadillac Formula 1 Team sees those years as meaningful and worthy of recording with this honor.
"I cherish the opportunity that it gives me to have a lasting bond with F1 and am genuinely appreciative of everyone who continues to acknowledge my part in racing history.”
The Cadillac Formula 1 Team, founded by TWG Motorsports and General Motors, will make its race debut at the Australian Grand Prix next week, marking the start of its first season in Formula 1.
The team recently unveiled its race livery and will field Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas as it begins competition at the pinnacle of global motorsport, with MAC-26 set to carry Andretti’s name into a new era for American involvement in the sport.
