Mattia Binotto declared Audi's stance on the next generation of Formula 1 engines, which should be efficient and road relevant according to the German automaker.

The discussion regarding the next generation of Formula 1 engines following the current failed formula is ramping up with the FIA pushing for simple, cheap, and naturally aspirated V8s running on sustainable fuels and with mild electrification.
However, Audi want the turbo to remain in the next engine formula, as they believe it is efficient as well as road relevant.
Speaking to Motorsport.com, Binotto explained Audi's position on the matter; he said: "Audi has always supported the importance of efficiency.
"The technology that allows for highly efficient engines is the same one that is then applied to road cars," he pointed out. "When we talk about efficiency, we're talking about fuel consumption, emissions, and technology transfer between motorsport and series production.
"The real challenge will be understanding how to design a Formula 1 engine that remains highly efficient but, at the same time, is less complex, lighter, and affordable. This is what we will have to address," Binotto explained.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is pushing hard for the V8s as well as lighter cars, with the return of refueling being an option, and while the governing body may have to wait until 2031 when it can impose the regulations, Ben Sulayem is trying to reach an agreement with stakeholders to bring that forward to 2030 at least.
Binotto hopes the best solution can be reached without having any compromises. He said: "I think the FIA, as the regulatory body, is rightly called upon to lead this discussion. Formula 1 needs the manufacturers, just as the manufacturers need Formula 1.
"In the end, as has always been the case, we'll have to find a solution that isn't simply a compromise, but the best possible one for everyone," the Audi F1 boss concluded.
