Lando Norris’ long-awaited Drivers' Championship win finally arrived under the lights of Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, where the beloved McLaren driver secured his maiden Formula 1 championship win with a third-place finish. The podium position was just enough to keep race winner Max Verstappen away from the Championship trophy by two points, ending the Red Bull driver’s four-year reign at the top.
The 2025 season is complete, and fans can finally breathe again. But some are already looking ahead to next year’s battles under new regulations, and are turning to trusted UK betting sites to engage with upcoming races and to support British drivers Norris and Lewis Hamilton, as well as stay up to date with other sports stars.
Norris’ road to victory was anything but easy. His season included perfect starts, a disqualification, controversial calls, and spirited fights with his teammate.

The Defining Moments of Norris’ Winning Season

Norris set the tone for his season when he won the opening round in Australia. In the rainy conditions, both he and teammate Oscar Piastri left the track, and only Norris could recover cleanly. He maintained control and went on to win the Melbourne race. This win gave him early breathing room over his teammate and main rival.
The next significant moment was in Monaco when his title dreams were reignited. Piastri had a mid-season surge where he was leading the rankings, winning four times in six races. However, a pole position set Norris up for a lights-to-flag victory in Monte Carlo. This crucial victory allowed Norris to close Piastri’s championship lead to just three points. After Moncao, Norris won three times in six rounds, including a home triumph at Silverstone. “I’ll remember this more than anything,” Norris said after the UK race.
One of the most significant moments didn’t come from the race track, but from the pit wall at Monza, Italy. Norris lost time after a slow pitstop, losing second place to Piastri. The team ordered Piastri to give back the position. The call was controversial across the paddock but gave Norris a vital three points. This was a championship-defining moment when you consider that he eventually won the Championship by two points. Piastri was disgruntled by the team call; however, the team believed the strategic balance had to be corrected after Norris allowed Piastri the first pitstop earlier in the race.
With the Netherlands race in Zandvoort, Norris’ hopes of the title were dashed. He suffered an engine failure, causing him to score zero points while Piastri won the race. He now had a 34-point deficit.
But from that low point came an impressive recovery. Norris outperformed Piastri in seven consecutive races, including wins in Mexico and Brazil. He had the perfect weekend in São Paulo, winning both the sprint race and the Grand Prix. This gave him his late-season lead.
Despite these successes, the season was bumpy for Norris and McLaren. He collided with Piastri in Canada, crashed in Saudi Arabia during qualifying, suffered a setup error in Las Vegas where both cars were disqualified, and had a strategy misstep in Qatar when he didn’t pit under safety car, handing the race victory to Verstappen.
Norris entered the final race in Abu Dhabi with a 12-point lead and needed a podium finish to win the title. Verstappen won, Piastri finished second, but the Briton had a clean race and ended third, resisting overtaking pressure from Ferrari’s Leclerc from the start of the race.
In the end, Norris avoided risks and brought home the Formula 1 world champion crown for the first time.
