George Russell was seething over the radio after Lap 1 of the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix after losing out to Max Verstappen, who locked up and went over the grass at Turn 1.

Russell's anger continued after the race due to a lack of penalty for Verstappen, who, to be fair, was already ahead of the #63 Mercedes before locking up.
Russell apparently found it easier to criticize the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez layout rather than the stewards and said after the race: “I don’t understand how three drivers can cut the first corner and just continue in the position they entered.
"It's like allowing you to risk everything, and you just have a get-out-of-jail-free card if you get it wrong," he added.
But what made matters worse for Russell is that he got tangled up in a later incident between Verstappen and seven-time Formula 1 Champion Lewis Hamilton, as he lost out to Ollie Bearman in the Haas, who executed an opportunistic pass to take third.
On that incident, Russell commented: “Obviously when Max and Lewis came together, Lewis got a penalty, and rightly so.
"But Max was off the track and came back on. It was the wrong place and the wrong time for me, and I lost three positions.
"Obviously I was pretty frustrated, but it all stemmed from lap one," the Briton added. “Ultimately it’s down to the circuit, and there is this get-out-of-jail-free card. If there was gravel, then nobody would be there.
“We’ve seen it almost every year we’ve been here. It was Carlos last year and Charles the year before or Lewis 10 years ago. It’s like a lawnmower race.
“Something needs to change there. That’s not really how it should be," Russell concluded.
