Lando Norris powered to a commanding victory from pole position, dominating the Mexico City Grand Prix, Round 20 of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on Sunday.

The result puts McLaren driver Norris at the top of the 2025 F1 Drivers’ standings with four race weekends remaining in the title fight. Having lost the lead to teammate Oscar Piastri after the Saudi Grand Prix in April.
Immediately after the race, in a heaving parc ferme in the stadium section of the track, deafened by what appeared to be boos from the crowd, Norris summed up his 10th Formula 1 victory: "It's one weekend at a time. I'm happy, I'm focused on myself. I keep my head down, I ignore all of this, and keep to myself. It's working at the minute, so I'm happy."
Norris led home Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in P2 and 2025 Formula 1 title contender Max Verstappen in P3 for Red Bull. The pair slugged it out for the second step of the podium until the final lap, a VSC denying the Red Bull ace a final charge on the Ferrari. It was tasty while it lasted!
In the other McLaren, Oscar Piastri was out of sorts all weekend, but did recover on the da,y but not enough to not relinquish the lead to Norris by a single point. The score is now 357 points to Lando, 356 to Oscar and Max on 321.

Norris delivered his greatest Grand Prix weekend at a crucial time

Before today's Mexico City showdown, Norris had already done much of the hard work on Saturday with a scintillating pole-winning lap, then made a superb start, keeping the lead when many in the past have failed to do so on that long, slipstream-friendly 800-metre straight before the sharp right-hander at Turn 1.
The leading McLaren hugged the inside line and flashed through the Turn 1 and Turn 2 complex in front, while relative chaos unfolded behind him as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton went on “farming” missions across the grass.
Verstappen escaped without a penalty, which seemed fair enough, but Hamilton - forced to run across the grass after missing the escape road at speed - rejoined safely and held position, only to be handed a draconian 10-second penalty. It felt harsh.
If the Ferrari #44 deserved that penalty, then so did the Red Bull #1, as both incidents could have been considered racing moments. It was a travesty, given Hamilton had nowhere else to go but across the grass.

Verstappen: It was a difficult weekend for us

Verstappen said after the race: ""It was very hectic at the beginning of the race for me. I almost crashed. "Everyone around me was on soft tyres, and we were on medium, so it was a bit of a struggle. It was about surviving the first stint.
"Once we bolted on the softs, I think we were a little bit more competitive and happier. It was a difficult weekend for us, but to be fighting for P2 with everything that happened in the first few laps was a very strong result," added the reigning F1 World Champion.
Before heading to the podium, Leclerc reported: "Very happy with this weekend. Austin was very positive but to end up on the podium again is a great surprise. Very happy to be on this amazing podium again. I was quite happy about the VSC at the end! My tyres were completely gone. I could see Max was coming back on the softs. It was tough, but the VSC saved me at the end."
Nevertheless, the day belonged to Norris. His finest race weekend to date saw him win by more than half a minute - the largest winning margin this year - with a flawless display of pace and control. It will not only go down as his best, but could also prove the turning point of this championship.

Bearman was unanimously the Driver of the Day

Behind the podium trio, the story of the race belonged to Oliver Bearman. The British rookie produced a sensational drive to finish fourth - the best result of his career - earning him Driver of the Day honours.
After qualifying strongly and battling with the Mercedes pair, Bearman’s clean racecraft and well-timed pit stops kept him ahead of faster cars in the closing stages. He resisted late pressure from Piastri in the final laps, crossing the line to ecstatic scenes in the Haas garage.
Piastri’s fifth place meant he lost the championship lead by a single point to Norris. Despite flashes of speed, the McLaren driver was frustrated throughout, unable to clear traffic early on and then stuck behind Russell and Bearman later.
Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive rookie season with a composed P6, benefitting from Mercedes’ late team order reversal, while George Russell followed him home in P7 after a weekend filled with radio tension due to a position swap between the pair during the race.

Hard done by Hamilton getting to grips with the Ferrari SF-25

As reported above, Hamilton endured another tough afternoon on a weekend he finally seemed to be getting a real handle on the SF-25. A 10-second penalty for gaining an advantage in an early clash with Verstappen dropped him out of podium contention, and he could do no better than eighth at the flag.
Esteban Ocon collected two valuable points for Haas in ninth, and Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the top ten after a steady drive and again outshining his veteran teammate Nico Hulkenberg, who suffered a DNF.
Outside the points, in the second Red Bull, Yuki Tsunoda’s early pace faded on worn mediums before pitting late for softs, leaving him out of contention. Lance Stroll recovered from a first-lap spin to finish but was typically invisible to most. Likewise, both Williams and Sauber entries ran anonymous races in the lower order.
There were four retirements: Carlos Sainz, who stopped in the final sector with two laps to go, Fernando Alonso, Nico Hülkenberg, and Liam Lawson. Their exits contributed to a fragmented race punctuated by investigations and brief yellow flags.
When the dust settled, Norris’s dominance and Bearman’s breakthrough defined the afternoon in Mexico City. The McLaren man now leads the title race once again, setting up a thrilling run-in with Piastri and Verstappen in the final four rounds of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship.
