Max Verstappen spoke about his experience of becoming a father after arriving late to Miami as he has been by the side of his girlfriend Kelly Piquet who gave birth to their first child, Lily.
Verstappen and Piquet
announced the birth of their daughter on Friday, but she was born earlier this week, as the reigning
Formula 1 champion revealed.
Speaking in Miami after skipping Thursday's media activities, Verstappen said: "Luckily, I got to spend a few days with them once she was born.
"It’s been great. You never really know what to expect, but it’s been very enjoyable and very special," he added.
However, the Dutchman admitted that it wasn't a totally new experience for him, as he was co-parenting with Piquet, helping her raise her five-year-old daughter she shares with her ex-boyfriend and former F1 driver, Daniil Kvyat.
Verstappen commented: "I’m kind of like a bonus dad already with my girlfriend having a daughter, so I saw her grow up since she was one."
The Red Bull ace is known for his lifestyle that is focused on racing, as he spends most of his off time simming at home, but will a newborn baby affect him?
"I think that will work out," he said. "Who knows, maybe in the future we can do it together. Everyone does it [parenting] in their own way … It will all work out."
Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner commented on the news of his star driver becoming a father; he said: "Great news for Max and Kelly.
"It is a big thing, becoming a father. Max is super proud, and rightly so," the Briton added. (Quotes from ESPN and Sky Sports F1)
