Vettel leads F1 drivers in homage to Ayrton Senna in Sao Paulo

Honouring the 30th anniversary of Senna’s passing, Vettel unveiled a massive helmet installation bearing Senna’s distinctive colours, crafted entirely from recycled materials. Located at the Senna Esses—a section of the Interlagos circuit that bears the late driver’s name—the installation is more than a visual tribute; it’s a statement on environmental responsibility.

For Vettel, Senna’s legacy is unique. While he looked up to Michael Schumacher as a young driver in Germany, Senna’s impact on Brazil and his commitment to social causes had a lasting influence on Vettel as he matured.

“Ayrton means so much in Brazil,” Vettel explained. “What he stood for is more than just racing. I think for people in Brazil, he’s still such a powerful character, and there’s so much inspiration to be taken from that.”

The helmet installation, which Vettel describes as “an installation that you can go inside and experience,” allows visitors to immerse themselves in Senna’s legacy. The interior features a black-and-white montage of some of Senna’s most iconic moments, honouring a career that includes three world championships, 41 race wins, and 65 pole positions.

Additionally, a solar-powered sound system provides an educational narration by Vettel, focusing on environmental themes. Vettel collaborated with German artist Matthias Garff and Brazilian artist Mundano to create the structure, a process that emphasised both the helmet’s cultural significance and its potential as an environmental statement.

Vettel said: “I immediately thought of a sculpture or an installation,” said Vettel. “We decided to go for the helmet because it’s the most personal item you have as a driver. It’s such a strong pull when it comes to recognising a driver.”

The four time F1 World Champion chose to use recycled materials to address the broader issue of waste management: “Only very little of Brazil’s waste gets recycled. Waste should be seen as a resource that can be fully recycled, not just as something to be discarded.”

The installation has roots in another tribute Vettel led earlier this season at Imola, another circuit closely associated with Senna. There, he organised a track run with a group of current F1 drivers to commemorate Senna’s contributions to the sport.

However, as Vettel explained, that event was fleeting: “Imola was incredible and very emotional, but it had something temporary, because we did those laps and the moment passed, which often in life is like this.” He said the Sao Paulo installation offered a different approach—a tribute that could “last” and potentially continue inspiring future fans and drivers.

Senna’s willingness to “speak up” for his beliefs, a trait that made him a beacon of hope in Brazil, is part of what draws Vettel to his legacy: “The idea of thinking about Interlagos and continuing to tell the story around Ayrton and taking inspiration from a person who had the courage to speak up and was very compassionate was to try and come up with something that lasts."

Vettel hopes the helmet installation will ultimately find a permanent home, possibly at the Instituto Ayrton Senna or another suitable venue in South America.

The installation, positioned near the track’s Senna Esses, where curbs are painted in the Brazilian flag’s green, yellow, and blue, has become a gathering point during the race weekend. After media photos and a short ceremony, Vettel led drivers and photographers toward the helmet, explaining its symbolism.

“We’ve got to explain to people what is going to happen, what we are all trying to do in ensuring a future for the next generations,” Vettel said, underscoring the installation’s dual role in honouring Senna and promoting environmental consciousness.

For Vettel, the environmental message of the installation is inseparable from Senna’s legacy, he explained: “Designing a product from the get-go, you should think about what happens to it at the end of its life.

“Not just selling it to somebody in the world and then being happy with the money that comes with it. It’s thinking as a resource, because obviously it came from somewhere in the first place, and it should go somewhere again—not end up on landfills, at dumps, or in the oceans," added Vettel, who sees the helmet as a way to convey the importance of waste as a resource, one that can be repurposed and reintegrated into the environment.

In bringing the F1 community together around this installation, Vettel has found a way to bridge his personal respect for Senna with a cause he has long championed. The project demonstrates how sports figures can leverage their platforms to highlight urgent global issues.

Vettel added: “I think the timing is right. Our world is changing fast, and there are so many topics when we talk about the environment that need addressing, so many topics when we talk about social issues, but it’s important to understand that they’re linked.”

The installation’s future remains open-ended, though Vettel expressed hope it will be displayed beyond the race weekend, possibly in a museum: “My dream would be to exhibit it for a certain time in a worthy place. The foundation is very involved, but my dream would be in South America, if there’s a museum that would be happy to exhibit it for a certain amount of time.”

Ultimately, Vettel’s tribute to Senna reflects his desire to leave a meaningful legacy, both as a racer and an advocate for sustainability. By drawing connections between Senna’s influence in Brazil and global environmental issues, Vettel aims to spark a dialogue within and beyond the Formula 1 community.

His hope is that the helmet installation will inspire the next generation of drivers and fans to carry forward not just Senna’s legacy but also the values of environmental stewardship and social awareness.
