Ferrari team boss Frédéric Vasseur has revealed his expectations for the 2024 Formula 1 season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix and dared his team to be bold with their challenge this year.

The Italian outfit looked strong throughout pre-season testing last week, managing the second-most number of laps (416) and securing the fastest lap of the test courtesy of Carlos Sainz Jr. with a 1:29.921. Teammate Charles Leclerc also topped the timing screens on the final day.

2023 proved to be a somewhat disappointing year for Ferrari, as they fell behind nearest rivals Mercedes in the closing stages of the Championship to ultimately finish third in the Constructors’ Standings.

Nevertheless they were the only team apart from the dominant Red Bull to claim a Grand Prix victory last year, which came at the Singapore round thanks to a brilliant race strategy from Sainz himself.

Their 2024 challenger, the SF-24, will be expected to close the gap to Red Bull and fight for regular podiums and wins.

Despite a historical driver signing for Hamilton to the Maranello-based outfit being scheduled for 2025, Team Principal Vasseur insists that 100% of his and the team’s focus and attention is on 2024.

Vasseur’s views on the SF-24

The Ferrari boss was satisfied with the data collected during pre-season testing, and has high hopes for the 2024 season, Vasseur said: “After the SF-24 completed over seven race distances during testing, when all teams ran to their own programmes, the time has finally come for everyone to show their hand.”

While it is difficult to know how Ferrari are comparing pace-wise to the other nine teams on the grid, Vasseur believes the team have succeeded in the factors that are under their control.

He continued: “Charles and Carlos felt comfortable at the wheel of the SF-24, which is exactly what we had set out to achieve when designing it. We are up against the usual tough opponents and I want to see us adopt the same approach we had in the closing stages of last season.”

Vasseur concluded by highlighting the Scuderia’s determination to move up the pecking order and start the 2024 campaign positively. He stated: “We must not be scared to dare if we believe a bold decision can make the difference when it comes to our performance.

“The car appears to be competitive, Charles and Carlos are in great shape and the mood in the team is super focused and we are determined to get a good result,” revealed Vasseur, of the two Ferrari drivers in their final season as teammates.

The opening race of the 2024 FIA F1 World Championship season commences Saturday, March 2nd at the Bahrain International Circuit preceded by FP1 and FP2 this Thursday, followed by FP2 and Qualifying on Friday.
