Red Bull have had the car to beat all weekend on the streets of Monte-Carlo, but what should have turned out to be a front row lockout for the Blues turned bittersweet even before qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, on Saturday afternoon, had even begun.
True to expectations Daniel Ricciardo blasted to pole position for the race in a record-setting lap time, celebrating with his trademark 'biggest smile in F1' while his glum-faced teammate Max Verstappen watched qualifying on TV from his pit garage while around him his crew toiled diligently to repair his severely damaged car.
Late in FP3, a couple of hours before qualy, Verstappen - who topped the timing screens at that point - went from hero-to-zero when he tagged the barriers and crashed heavily exiting the swimming pool complex.
It was a severe wreck that was returned to the pits and despite gallant efforts by the mechanics to repair the RB14 they failed to get their driver back out on track.
The youngster has a chequered record in Monaco, crashing in 2015 and 2016, and has had a series of incidents already this season.
Team chief Christian Horner contemplated the fact that one of his cars would be starting from top spot, the other would be lining up last on the grid, "It feels a little bittersweet. We're delighted with pole but we should have had two cars up there. It's frustrating with such a fast car not to have both cars on the front row of the grid."
"Daniel's been on it all weekend, he's been quickest in every session, every qualifying piece and he's delivered two great laps which were capable of pole. He's done an amazing job."
"Max's car was fired up and then we saw an oil leak in the gearbox which had been hidden and that was it. They did their best to get the gearbox replaced, which would have been a five-place penalty, but I have to say both car crews did everything that they could to make it happen. Today unfortunately it wasn't to be."
"This place bites hard if you abuse it. Max is a very fast driver, we know that, and this weekend he has a great car. He needs to learn from it and stop making these errors."
"Nobody will be more frustrated than him. He should have been competing for the front row today. There is no more brutal lesson than what he has just had," added Horner.
In 2016 Verstappen had a remarkably similar accident:
