Hot on the heels of updating readers on Rashid Al Dhaheri's adventures in the Formula 4-based Formula Regional Middle East Trophy, we can now report he has scored a double win in his home series against a formidable field.
All good 'training' ahead of the all-important European-based season that lies ahead, for a driver we have reported on
since he started karting.
Rashid claimed two wins at Round 2 of the Formula Regional Middle East Trophy at Yas Marina Circuit, completing a seven-day period in which he secured three victories and moved into the championship lead.
The Emirati returned to Yas Marina following his first Formula Regional win earlier in the month and again proved competitive across the weekend. Driving for R ace GP, he set the fastest time on the Corkscrew configuration with a lap of 1:40.480 during the event.
Al Dhaheri led free practice on Friday and qualified second in both Q1 and Q2 on Saturday, lining up P2 for Race 1.
At the start, he moved into the lead at Turn 1 and remained in front through several interruptions, including yellow flag periods and a red flag stoppage. He won the race from the 31-car field and recorded the fastest lap.
Rashid: These victories belong to all of us
Race 2 saw Al Dhaheri start from P12 due to the reverse grid format applied to the top 12 finishers. He gained positions on the opening lap to reach the top 10 but later lost ground following setup issues and finished P15 outside the points.
He returned to the front in Race 3, starting again from P2. A strong start allowed him to take the lead into Turn 1, after which he controlled the race over the 28 minute plus one lap distance. He secured his second victory of the weekend and again set the fastest lap.
Al Dhaheri said: “To win three races in seven days all on my home track is something I will never forget. Racing here in front of my family and the fans who have supported me since the very beginning makes this incredibly special. I’m proud to represent my country at this level and I’m deeply grateful to R-ace GP my supporters and everyone who believed in me. These victories belong to all of us.”
Following the Yas Marina round, Al Dhaheri leads the Formula Regional Middle East Trophy standings. The series continues next weekend at Dubai Autodrome, where he will look to maintain his position at the top of the championship.
