Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has come out in support of his under-fire superstar driver Lewis Hamilton after the Briton got himself into a spot of hot water for comments about India's poverty as a background to the grand prix in the country which hosted three Formula 1 races from 2011 to 2013.
In an interview with BBC, Hamilton said, "I've been to India before to a race which was strange because India was such a poor place yet we had this massive, beautiful grand prix track made in the middle of nowhere. I felt very conflicted when I went to that grand prix."
Soon after Twitter-land was buzzing with the news, many Indian fans taking offence at Hamilton's comments which he then clarified on his own account.
Shortly after, Wolff backed his driver (also on Twitter) while lamenting how words were twisted, “It is once again unbelievable to me how the words and the meaning of Lewis get spun out of context in this way."
"He spoke with empathy about India and the painful contrast between wealth and poverty that we face while travelling the globe as sporting ambassadors.”
"Lewis did not criticise the nation and his words were those of a thoughtful and considered champion. The only fault here lies with the people who have twisted his words to mean something else entirely,” added the Mercedes team chief.
In December last year, Hamilton got himself into trouble for his now-famous "princess dress" faux pas that resulted in a social media freeze for the World Champion which lasted into January.
