“Now we have a platform to go for glory!” declared James Vowles after signing a new long-term contract to remain Team Principal of Williams Racing, ensuring continuity at the helm of the Grove outfit with its ambitious mission to return to the front of the Formula 1 grid.
Vowles, who turns 46 tomorrow, described Williams as “home” and reaffirms his long-term ambition to rebuild the legendary Formula 1 team into a championship contender: “I am delighted to sign a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing, which has felt like home from the moment I walked through the door.
“This iconic team has already given me some incredible memories and we are all united in our ambition to build on our legacy and win World Championships again. Over the past two years we have focused on fixing the foundations, and now have a platform to go for glory in the years to come,” Vowles added.
The British engineer joined Williams at the start of 2023 after over two decades in Formula 1, most recently with Mercedes, where he played a central role in their dominant run of nine Constructors’ Championships and more than 120 Grand Prix victories. He became just the third Team Principal in Williams’ 48-year history and has since led a top-to-bottom overhaul of the operation.
That rebuilding process has already begun to bear fruit at Williams
With new facilities coming online, strengthened technical leadership, and an all-new driver line-up of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz for 2025, Williams has made its strongest start to a season since 2016. The team currently sits fifth in the Constructors’ Championship with 55 points—more than it scored in the past three seasons combined.
Vowles' extension also comes as team owners Dorilton Capital prepare to mark five years at the helm of the team this August. The American investment firm has overseen increased funding, major infrastructure projects, and now, long-term leadership stability with Vowles’ renewed contract.
Matthew Savage, Chairman of Atlassian Williams Racing and
Dorilton Capital, welcomed the development: “We are thrilled that James has signed a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing and committed his future to completing the mission that we are on together.
"He has brought experience, energy and strategic leadership to the task of restoring Williams to the top step of the podium. We aren’t there yet but you can sense the momentum we are building at Grove and are excited about what lies ahead," savage added.
Backed by major technical hires, new partnerships with global brands such as Atlassian, and a renewed sense of purpose, Williams believes it now has the structure and stability to move forward in its pursuit of championship success.
