Sebastian Vettel believes that Mick Schumacher has the right stuff to be a star but at the same time has called for patience as the 19-year-old took a step closer to Formula 1 when he was chosen for the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) last week.
This weekend, Vettel and Schumacher junior, son of the legendary Michael Schumacher, were on duty for Team Germany at the Race of Champions (ROC) in Mexico City, the pair finishing second in the Nations Cup on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters after the ROC, Vettel said, "I am sure Michael Schumacher would be extremely proud of Mick. It was very special for me to drive with him this weekend."
"I remember very well making my debut at the Race of Champions alongside Michael and now I'm in a team with his son Mick."
"We can be happy with our results. The Race of Champions is never easy because you compete against specialists from many different series here and all of them are outstanding drivers," added Vettel.
Last week, news of Schumacher joining the FDA went mainstream as the prospect of the youngster rebooting the 'Schumi' legacy at Ferrari captures the imagination of sports fans beyond F1.
A Formula 1 test drive or two during the course of 2019, with the Reds or with one of their customer teams Haas or Sauber, are reportedly on the cards,
On the subject, Vettel said, "It's great for Mick. I hope he stays with us for a long time and one day he can drive with me. Or maybe I can hand over the steering wheel to him when I stop one day."
But the four-time F1 World Champion also cautioned, "Let's give Mick time and allow him to go his own way. He's already under pressure enough, but he has what it takes to become a star."
