Max Verstappen touched on Red Bull's fuel qualifying miscalculation at last week's 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, claiming it's not rocket science, but just requires proper monitoring of the fuel level.
The 2021
Formula 1 Champion's chances of clinching pole in Singapore evaporated as his team called him in on his final flying lap, a stonking lap, as they were worried there wouldn't be enough fuel left in the car to pass scrutineering.
Verstappen was enraged by that, and went over the team radio with an expletive laden rant, as it was Red Bull who asked him to back out of one lap before and go for an extra one at the end of Q3, while there wasn't enough fuel for that.
Many criticized the Dutchman for overreacting, but asked about the subject in Thursday's media conference in Japan, he said: "It's not rocket science.
Pay attention to the fuel level
"I mean just pay attention to the fuel level. So there is not much to really change. When you fuel the car for five laps, you can do five laps, you're not going to be able to do six laps.
"You can talk about it for hours but it's not going to suddenly change anything," he said when asked if he talked about the incident with the team. "But it's not only that.
"We had a very poor Friday in terms of amount of laps so also there, I think a few things went wrong because when we made changes to the car we couldn't really test of course, because it was wet. Carried that on into the race.
"So yeah, just very messy weekend and I think that was just a prime example of how you don't want a weekend to go. So you learn from that," the Red Bull ace lamented.
"But there's nothing like it suddenly needs to change in the team. We all know that it was a bad weekend but we also have shown this year that we've had a lot of very good weekends, so we know how to do it," Verstappen maintained.
Verstappen will be looking to secure his second F1 Title in a row at this weekend Japanese Grand Prix.
