Max Verstappen was revealed to be a Tom Jones fan on Sunday after the triple Formula 1 Champion followed up his pole-to-flag victory in Brazil with an in-car rendition of the 83-year-old Welsh singer's 1967 pop hit "Green Green Grass of Home".
The music was played to the 26-year-old over the team radio after his record-extending 17th win of the season, with Red Bull team boss Christian Horner encouraging his laughing but reluctant Dutch driver to sing along on the victory lap.
"The old house is still standing, though the paint is cracked and dry," warbled Verstappen, after previously warning - with reason as it turned out - that he was not a good singer.
'Radio Red Bull' turned out to be his only fail of the day, as Verstappen was told: "Just don't give up the day job." He replied: "I think I'm better at that."
Horner explained to reporters later that the driver and his father Jos used to listen to Jones' songs over and over in the car while travelling to go-kart races around Europe in his youth.
"It was the most unlikely song," said the Briton, whose wife Geri rose to fame with the Spice Girls. "But Jos told me in Qatar (where Verstappen won his third title).
"I said 'what's his favourite song?' He went 'Green Green Grass' by Tom Jones. He was off on it. He knew all the words.
"Obviously after the Spice Girls I was thinking he would be totally into Ed Sheeran or somebody, a contemporary of his age range. But Tom Jones?"
Lando Norris made Verstappen work for the win
Verstappen reflected on another weekend of dominance, winning from Norris who tried his best to beat the Dutchman but to no avail.
"It has been a good weekend in Brazil," Verstappen said in Red Bull's race report. "It was a great race and we had good all-round pace throughout. Again, it was a really long stint on the tyres and it was important to save them throughout as we had high tyre degradation.
"Lando had a good race and I had to work to defend in the first lap and maintain the gap. He was close to me in stint one and pushed a bit harder on the newer compounds at the start but I stayed calm throughout the race, just relaxed and let the car roll into the corner. He did well and we had some good racing today.
"It has been quite a long triple header so looking forward to a few days break before preparing for Vegas. I am enjoying the moment and hopefully we can continue this success until the end of the year," the Red Bull ace concluded.
Verstappen's win in Brazil means he now has 52 wins, one more than four time F1 Champion Alain Prost and one less from another four-time Champion, Sebastian Vettel, making him the fourth most winning driver in the history of the sport.
