Mercedes boss Toto Wolff remains wary of Ferrari ahead of Qualifying for the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix despite Kimi Antonelli topping the final practice.
Mercedes were playing catchup on Friday as
Ferrari dominated the proceedings, but it seems that the tables have turned in FP3.
Antonelli, the
Formula 1 Championship leader, who wasn't fully happy with his W17 on Friday, delivered a blistering lap to top FP3, which means he was over three tenths clear of Charles Leclerc, who was second in the Ferrari.
Speaking to
Sky Sports F1 after FP3, Wolff insisted Ferrari couldn't be ruled out despite the positive surprise that was Antonelli's lap.
"That was a good session for Kimi, fast. Now we just need to continue to build for qualifying," he said. "Leclerc’s lap before he made a mistake in Turn 10 was there or thereabout, so it’s still not going to be a walk in the park, but we are very positively surprised."
And while Antonello was on it, his teammate George Russell was over seven tenths off the pace.
"I think with George you can never write him off," Wolff said of the Briton. "He’s going to look at the data; he still didn’t feel 100 percent confident or comfortable in the car in the way that Kimi did, so I’m quite keen to see how the two are going to be in qualifying."
It appears that Antonelli's father has been warning him about overcooking it around the streets of Monaco, which may have drastic consequences.
Asked to comment on that, Wolff said, "Kimi's dad is a driver and has been part of making Kimi what he is today, and if the father says that he’s already quite on the limit, that means this and no more!
"It’s an experience thing – I hope he can carry that easiness about it into qualifying and have the car fly," the Austrian concluded.
