Now that the long shadow of Lewis Hamilton has lifted, George Russell the heir apparent at Mercedes is finally stepping into the light and now leading the Formula 1 team with aplomb.

If there was a surprise in today’s qualifying, it was Russell sticking it on P2 in Qualifying for the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. Even he seemed surprised. He knew the lap was good, but a front-row start? That caught everyone off guard. And that sums up Mercedes right now—they don’t really know what they’ve got until it’s unleashed.
There was little sign before that final Q3 run that the Mercedes had that kind of pace. Ferrari looked strong throughout practice, but when it counted, Russell delivered.
There’s always been a lingering suspicion that Russell held back out of respect for Hamilton. Understandable, given who he was up against. But now, with a rookie in the other car in the form of Kimi Antonelli, the Briton has been handed the keys and he’s growing into the role.
After the surprise P2 in Shanghai on Saturday, Russell reflected: "It feels incredible, to be honest. It was one of the hardest qualy sessions I've done in a long, long time. I was trying all sorts with my preparation with the tyres and nothing seemed to be clicking."

Russell: I did something totally different on that last lap and it all came alive

"The last lap was awesome. So happy to be P2," declared Russell. "The last one [out lap] was a bit of a roll of the dice. I had a big moment at Turn One but it just all came together. I was really surprised when I crossed the line, I knew it was a good lap but to be between the McLarens, just buzzing and looking forward to tomorrow."
Regarding race day, Russell said: "It's going to be tough. The medium tyre in the Sprint was difficult. Obviously, I think most drivers will start on that at the front of the field tomorrow. The hard no one has ran all weekend. So we don't know at the moment whether it's going to be a one or a two-stop.
"We know the McLarens are going to be quick but I'll be doing everything to try and stay where we are or try to jump ahead of them," added Russell, who finished p4 in the Sprint Race earlier in the day.
The 27-year-old looks more settled, more focused and seemingly happier than we’ve seen him in a while. The question now is whether he can convert that front-row start into victory. Can he survive wheel-to-wheel combat, where he has been suspect in the past, and hold his own against Piastri and fend off the pack behind?
Based on today’s form, you’d have to say yes. And if McLaren trip over themselves again, Russell might just steal a win. It would be a timely one too. On the occasion of his 130th GP start, it could be the perfect punctuation mark to a weekend that showed what Russell might really be made of.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said of Russell's effort: "George was able to put the whole lap together and P2 was the result. It was a great effort and another calm and composed performance from him. Starting from P2, we will be looking to hold our own in the early stages and see where we net out. Nobody has run the Hard compound tyre yet so that is an unknown going into Sunday. Let's see what we can do."
