Sir Patrick Head, the man who along with Sir Frank Williams, turned the Williams team into the mighty force that won them 16 Formula 1 World Championship titles, has returned to steady the ship at Grove. As a figurehead, there are few that command as much respect as Head and thus no surprise that rookie driver George Russell is relishing working with the F1 legend.
Ahead of his second Grand Prix weekend, speaking about the latest development to salvage Williams, Russell told reporters in Bahrain, "It will be great honestly."
"He’s coming in on a support role, it’s not anything full-time, but with his presence, he’s a very strong character with a lot of personalities and it’s maybe what we need at the moment. I think for all of his experience and history he has at Williams just having him around will lift everyone.”
“Patrick is a fantastic engineer and all of his success speaks for itself. He’s not looking for anything full-time, he’s been there done that, but he’s part of Williams and he wants to help if needed, so as I said it’d be great having him around.”
Teammate Robert Kubica, “Patrick has experience, everybody respects him a lot, he has done an enormous job in the past for this team. I think there is massive respect from him in the team. It’s good that he will be able to at least in I don’t know what way help us, we’ll see.”
Although Head's presence is being hailed as a step in the right direction, exactly what impact he will have in a vastly changed organisation remains to be seen. He gave up his position within the team in 2012 but still owns 9.3% of the shares with the organisation.
Big Question: What can Sir Patrick do to turn things around for Williams?
