Editors,
I am strongly considering leaving this site for good. Too much lately I feel this site is no longer covering all of Formula 1 and instead is choosing to focus on only those stories that depict this sport in a bad light, similar to FoxNews choosing to report only hate-filled stories about President Obama and to a lesser extent, Democrats in general, or to MSNBC and their depiction of all things Republican.
There are a lot of good things going on in F1 today; I myself enjoy reading about the workings of the current power units and how the technology might someday become relevant in production cars, how the teams are working within the current regulations on how to improve downforce, and what the drivers are doing when not racing, Jenson Button and his marathon triathlon interests for example and NOT who Lewis Hamilton might be dating this week.
What I'm seeing more times than not since this season began though, is how awful the sport has become and opinion pieces from past drivers on how they were so much more manly than the drivers of today.
People fear change. They always do. Education is the way to overcome fear. The more people learn about something that 's changed and the benefits improvements it has created over the old way of doing things is what brings them around.
Yes, there will always be that minority who makes a lot of noise about "the good old days" but I feel too much focus is placed on them simply because they are loud, not the majority.
I know that journalistic organizations must cater to the masses in order to make their money but is the coverage of what we're seeing due to being what people want to see, or is it they're watching it because it's all that's being covered and they have no choice to watch anything else? I'm taking the latter view and as a result, I'm tuning out.
I honestly cannot believe that Formula 1 is in such a state that the overbalanced negative stories on this site is all there is to cover. If it were, why would Team Haas be investing in this sport for their debut next season? Why would there be talks of Renault looking to become a works team again?
Where are the investigative stories about the impact of having a US based team in the sport again and the boost in viewership it will bring here in the US? Will this boost bring about a second (or even third) race on the calendar in the US?
Hate is the easiest emotion to convey because it requires no thinking, only reacting. If a person (in general) reads or hears something and their immediate reaction is that it doesn't immediately benefit them, then they hate it.
Love is an emotion that requires thought; in order to love something one must open themselves up to learn how it can be a benefit to many instead of just themselves. If all we're getting access to on this site are stories reacting to something, then of course people are going to start hating it.
As journalists I sincerely hope you will consider taking the more difficult path instead of the easy one.
Thank you,
