New Video: Max Verstappen during his 24h Nürburgring adventure "We had a little moment"

The Dutchman was one of the stars of the event as he combined his Formula 1 commitments with an ambitious assault on one of motorsport's toughest races, helping propel the #3 Mercedes-AMG into contention for victory before a late driveshaft failure ended the team's hopes.

Verstappen, Jules Gounon, Daniel Juncadella and Lucas Auer shared driving duties in the Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing.  Speaking during the race, Verstappen revealed that despite leading for long periods, there had been a nervous moment early in his stint.

Asked about an incident that saw him make contact with the barriers, Verstappen admitted: "We had a little moment. I think I turned in a bit too early and then, yeah, we had a little moment there, but it was all fine. You just have to keep yourself together, stay calm and refocus."

The comment offered a glimpse into the concentration required around the 25km Nordschleife, where even the smallest mistake can have major consequences.

Despite the scare, Verstappen quickly settled into a strong rhythm as changing weather conditions added another challenge to an already demanding race.

The four-time Formula 1 World Champion explained that overtaking slower traffic was initially difficult: "It was a bit difficult to clear the cars early on, but once I got past a few of them and the weather started to change, with a few laps in slippery conditions.

"That's where I think we made the difference. After that, the car felt good. The key was trying to stay out of trouble while still pushing and driving on the limit. That's always a difficult balance to find, but it worked out well."

Those comments reflected the maturity of Verstappen's endurance racing approach. While his reputation has been built on outright speed in Formula 1, the Nürburgring 24 Hours demands patience, traffic management and risk control over a full day of racing.

As rain threatened sections of the circuit, Verstappen also highlighted the challenge facing drivers heading into the latter stages of the race: "It was not only about preparing for the night. It was also about understanding what the weather was going to do and how much rain we might get. I think the coming hours are going to be very challenging."

By the time Verstappen handed the car back to Juncadella, the #3 Mercedes-AMG remained firmly in the fight at the front. Reflecting on his final stint, he said: "It was good. We were back in daylight conditions and the aim was simply to keep things safe while maintaining a decent pace.

"The car felt good and was working well. It was really about staying out of trouble. On the final lap, there was a close call right in front of me when two cars made contact, but fortunately we got through safely."

Although Verstappen Racing ultimately missed out on victory when a driveshaft failure struck with only a few hours remaining, the team's performance across the event underlined just how competitive the project had become.

Looking back while still in the thick of the race, Verstappen summed up the mood inside the garage: "So far, we could not have wished for it to go any better. But there are still a few hours to go. We need to stay focused and then we will see where we end up."

For much of the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Verstappen and his team did exactly that, delivering one of the standout stories of the event before mechanical heartbreak denied them a dream victory. Setting a unique benchmark for a Formula 1 world champion.
