Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton led from start to finish in the weekend’s Italian Grand Prix and leapfrogged Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel to top of the drivers’ standings in the process.
The German and his Ferrari teammate Kimi Räikkönen endured a disappointing weekend by their standards but he did manage to impressively claim a third place finish and a spot on the podium. Only three points separate Hamilton and Vettel now at the top of the driver standings.
It’s the first time this season that Lewis Hamilton has actually been on top of the table and in the lead in the drivers’ championship and this is a telling sign that Ferrari aren’t done quite just yet. With only three points separating Hamilton and Vettel, the German could reclaim top spot pretty quickly as Formula 1 heads to Singapore next, a place where Vettel reigned supreme in 2015.
Many people saw this recedes victory as a turning point and believe that now Hamilton is back at the top he will be an immovable force going forward and Hamilton believes that himself. He will be determined to push harder and harder now as the season progresses in search of his 4th Formula One title. For this to happen though, Mercedes have to keep on improving and that is something they will definitely be aiming to do over the next 7 races.
It’s sure to be a thrilling run in for the fans with the battle for the Drivers’ Championship being so close at this stage already. You literally can’t pick between Vettel and Hamilton, however, most sports betting operators have the British driver as favourite to win the Driver’s Championship.
People may look at the Singapore grand prix and feel Ferrari may have a slight edge, especially after Vettel was victorious on the track in 2015. So you can see Vettel reclaiming top spot pretty quickly but on the other hand, many would suggest Mercedes have an edge in both the Malaysian and Japanese grand prix. It will be no doubt a closely fought battle with even Unibet not being able to make up their minds; as they have both Vettel and Hamilton as 6/4 joint favourites to win at Singapore.
It could really come down to which team can improve their car the most over the last few races. Both Mercedes and Ferrari will be looking to give their driver the edge and it may only take a slight improvement to see one of them take control of the Drivers’ Championship to claim the much coveted title. Vettel, who has led the championship since China, was literally powerless in stopping Hamilton and Mercedes at Monza and Mercedes have looked a lot quicker recently than Ferrari.
One thing is for sure though. This contest is far from over. Hamilton and Mercedes may have the upper hand for now but that could quickly change again in Singapore with Vettel looking to repeat his 2015 feat. Mercedes have looked quicker over recent times but Ferrari are always a force and a team to be reckoned with and you can’t see them going down without a fight. In any case, this should be a season to remember, especially for the Formula 1 fans around the globe.
