Mercedes' F1 team announced its race trucks and generators achieved 98% biofuel coverage during the 2024 F1 European season, and saved over 500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e).
The German team used HVO100, a second-generation biofuel, in partnership with Petronas and logistics partners. The goal was to extend biofuel use during the nine European races, covering both freight logistics and motorhome operations. This marks an increase from 74% biofuel coverage in 2023 to 98% in 2024, as part of Mercedes' strategy to reach net-zero emissions for Mercedes F1 Team by 2030.
Since the initial pilot in 2022, the team has continued efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its logistics. The successful use of biofuel demonstrates the viability of sustainable fuels in motorsport operations, despite logistical challenges across Europe.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes F1 said in a press release: "Powering our European season on biofuel is a first for our team and sport, and I hope our achievements, with the invaluable support, expertise and supply capability of our Title and Technical Partner Petronas, will inspire others to follow.

"The use of biofuel for our logistics beyond the European races and continuing to prepare for the introduction of the fully sustainable fuel which will power the 2026 cars on track," added Wolff.
Alice Ashpitel, Mercedes F1’s Head of Sustainability, emphasized the importance of the biofuel coverage: "We're a team of problem solvers, and pursuing sustainable high performance is always front of mind. Optimising our logistics operations and achieving almost total biofuel coverage reflects our team's significant sustainability efforts.
"It's a real inspiration to see the reduction of our impact at the track and on the road. We continue to address the largest sources of our emissions, and how we transport the team's freight and power our operations across the globe remain key focus areas," explained Ashpitel.
Mercedes aims to continue its progress with sustainable fuels, with plans to extend biofuel use to flyaway races next season, as Formula 1 prepares to implement centralized sustainable power solutions for European races in 2025.
Mercedes and its drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will be in action at this weekend's United States Grand Prix, at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
