Red Bull driver chief Helmut Marko explained why his team have offered their former driver Daniil Kvyat another chance in the top flight by signing him up for Toro Rosso in 2019, fittingly confirming the news on the eve of the Russian Grand Prix.
Marko revealed to Sky F1 why and how they are giving the 24-year-old this chance, "We have been in contact. He was informed about Ricciardo’s move before it was announced, so he rang me before Ricciardo did. But we had been in contact before that already."
“He’s more mature, he’s more settled, and I think we will see the fast Kvyat as we have in memory. He’s more hungry, and he saw how difficult it is to get a seat in F1. Now he starts everything new, there are all chances.”
Marko believes the 'red mist' moments that littered Kvyat's career and ultimately led to his demotion from Red Bull to Toro Rosso two years ago, ironically, immediately after his home race.
"We saw it when he was driving last year. It was a spiral. But as I said, we have been in contact, he told me the reasons why things happened. His whole environment is a much better one."
After breaking ties with Red Bull last year, Kvyat was taken on by Ferrari in the role of simulator driver and reserve off sorts.
Marko insists that the time Kvyat has spent at Ferrari has been well spent, "[Ferrari] helped, he got a much wider view of what Formula 1 is. A very good education. I am confident. The Honda engine, and more or less half the chassis from RBR – it could be a surprise for a lot of people."
