Lando Norris, in the aftermath of the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, is adamant he would not ask McLaren to order Oscar Piastri to let him pass.
While Norris took pole for Sunday's
Formula 1 race at Monza, teammate Piastri outraced him on the first lap of the race with a brilliant pass into the chicane, the Briton dropping to third after Ferrari's Charles Leclerc took advantage and passed to take second.
After that, Norris could not catch Piastri and suffered from excessive graining, while Ferrari outsmarted McLaren with a one stop strategy to take a great victory on their home turf in front of the Tifosi.
However, McLaren once again were under fire for allowing Piastri to race Norris the latter being within a mathematical shot of the F1 Drivers' Crown as Championship leader Max Verstappen continues to struggle with his RB20.
That is not to mention that Norris has been recently falling short in terms of race craft struggling with his starts and despite having four pole positions this season, he converted only one to the win at the
previous race at Zandvoort. His first win in Miami was not from pole.
However, Norris refused to go down the team order path, insisting he would not ask McLaren to prioritize him over Piastri.
McLaren should decide whether team orders are employed
Facing the media on the post-race press conference, Norris said: "I'm not here just to beg for someone to let me pass, that's not what I'm here for.
"I'm here to race, he [Piastri] drove a better race than me so I finished third and that's where I deserved to finish," he insisted.
Quizzed given the situation in the F1 Drivers' Championship and the fact that there are eight races remaining are reasons for McLaren to impose team orders and back him, Norris said: "I mean I would love it, but its not up to me.
"It's a tough one, obviously I wouldn't say we're running out of time but time is going away slowly and I still believe we can do it. The pace is obviously great. I still believe we probably have close to if not the best car again today.
"I don't know, it's not for me to decide, it's for the team ... when you're fighting for a Championship you want every little thing and I'm doing everything I can.
"The best way simply is just to win the race and I didn't do that today because of some silly things," Norris concluded.
Norris is currently 62 points behind Verstappen in the 2024 F1 Drivers' Championship.
