Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert tipped Williams rookie Franco Colapinto as the best option for Red Bull to replace the struggling Sergio Perez.
Perez continues to underperform at Red Bull, and as a result, they are probably going to lose their F1 constructors' crown, as the Mexican is not contributing enough points to the team's tally.
Perez's seat was under threat around the time of the F1 summer break, but Red Bull confirmed that he will see out the 2024 season with them, and he also has a contract for 2025, but as his struggles continue, Christian Horner said he might have to
take some difficult decisions.
Now, the driver rumored to be Perez's replacement is Colapinto, who has impressed since his debut with Williams, replacing crash-prone Logan Sargeant for the
Italian Grand Prix.
Indeed, veteran F1 journalist Joe Saward mentioned in his
Green Book blog from Sao Paulo that Horner has met with Williams team principal James Vowles to discuss the chances of signing Colapinto, whose performance has given the Grove F1 team a bit of a dilemma as they have Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz signed for 2025.
The other dilemma is over at Red Bull, who also have Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda at their junior team, Visa Cash App RB, and both itching to get a chance to become Max Verstappen's teammate.
Herbert gave his view on Colapinto's situation; he said: "He [Colapinto] was good in F3. In my day, when I won F3, I got a couple of F1 tests, and people were impressed.
"Nowadays they are so limited with the testing. So, when Colapinto got the opportunity and delivered as he did, everyone goes, 'Wow.' It is only because he gets in the car. And it wasn't just a one-off; it's every time he has been in the car.
"If he had been affiliated to a team, he would probably still be doing simulator testing. With that, you don't get seen in the wider bubble of F1. It's lovely he's had this chance and shown what a talent he is."
Lawson and Tsunoda have a seat; Colapinto doesn't
As for the situation at Red Bull and whether Colapinto should replace Perez and not Lawson, who has been solid since replacing Daniel Ricciardo for the US Grand Prix. Tsunoda also is pushing for a chance at Red Bull.
Herbert commented: "There has been chatter about Sergio Perez being replaced, what Sergio brings to the team in terms of sponsorship, and whether Colapinto could do the same with his Argentine sponsors and that would work out.
"Both Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda have done a really good job. RB have two good drivers, but if you look at Colapinto and what he has achieved in the Williams, which is not quite as good as the RB car, he has impressed more.
"When you listen to what you hear in the paddock, Colapinto is the one who needs to get the chance," he insisted. They have all proved they have that raw speed.
"It's taken a little bit longer for Yuki, but they've stuck with him at RB, and he is now achieving and was unlucky not to get on to the podium in Brazil. Liam has been able to jump in, and his qualifying is very good, as his race pace.
"The one I'd like to see is Colapinto, who, unlike the other two, hasn't got a seat, and he has more than earned the chance from what we have seen so far," Herbert concluded.
