Lewis Hamilton brought his scintillating form across the world from Sao Paulo last weekend to Qatar Grand Prix qualifying today, the Mercedes driver untouchable on his way to pole position for Sunday's race.
It was also the first pole at Formula 1's newest venue -
Losail International Circuit - and a masterful one too as the World Champion destroyed his title rival Red Bull's Max Verstappen by an immense four tenths of a second.
One could argue that Hamilton hit that rich vein of form at the Sao Paulo Sprint Race, that carried through to the Grand Prix last Sunday, which he won from tenth on the grid.
Tomorrow, seven days later he lines up in pole position, and with no grind through the perilous midfield, who can stop him from winning the first Qatar Grand Prix.
Lewis: A decent run into Turn 1, which is wide so I will give it everything
Speaking after claiming his 102nd pole, "[Friday] was a really difficult day for me actually. Thursday and Friday I wasn't feeling too well and so really struggled throughout practice. I was just off yesterday so really had to dig deep.
"I was here until midnight last night working with the engineers, who also always work so late, they're such hard workers and found a lot of areas which I could improve. Made a lot of changes for P3 and it seemed to work.
"Then of course you've got to carry that through to qualifying, but I'm so grateful for the timings they put us out on track, we didn't have any traffic. Then that last lap was beautiful. It was a really sweet lap.
"This track is amazing to drive and it felt good. Being that it is such a fast circuit I don’t think it’s the easiest of circuits to follow, but it is not massively degrading on the tyre - it is a decent run into Turn 1, which is wide so I will give it everything," declared Hamilton, who trails Verstappen by 14 points with three rounds remaining.
