Romain Grosjean believes that Lewis Hamilton would also have struggled to "fight for points" if he was driving a Haas during the 2020 Formula 1 season.
While Hamilton romped to a seventh world title driving the class-leading Mercedes, Grosjean ended his final campaign in F1 with just two points and a best finish of ninth at the Eifel Grand Prix.
Both Grosjean and his teammate Kevin Magnussen were not renewed for another year by the US-owned outfit, but the Frenchman argued that in F1, your results largely depend on the equipment you are given.
"Hamilton would never have been able to fight for points in last year’s Haas car either," he told
RacingNews365. "A lot depends on the car you drive.
"That makes it difficult to compare drivers with each other.
“Leclerc, for example, in my opinion also drove a good 2020 season, but because his car was not good enough it didn’t quite come out. Russell is perhaps the clearest example that proves that the car ultimately makes the difference.”
Grosjean also highlighted Sergio Perez for praise, with the Mexican set drive for Red Bull in 2021 after seven years at the team now known as Aston Martin.
“I think it’s great that he’s getting a chance there," he added.
"I’m very happy for him and I’m convinced that he will do well in a top team.
“It’s his second chance at a top team, after his time at McLaren, but now it’s different. He is really ready now to put his cards on the table.”
While Magnussen made his
IMSA debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona last weekend with Cadillac, Grosjean has received interest from IndyCar team
Dale Coyne Racing for a drive in 2021.
