Formula 1’s 2026 pre-season programme has given bookmakers enough evidence to redraw the pecking order ahead of Melbourne, with George Russell installed as favourite for the Australian Grand Prix.
After a winter that began with a Barcelona shakedown from January 26 to 30 and continued with two three-day tests in
Bahrain from February 11 to 13 and February 18 to 20, the first real data of the new regulation cycle is in.
Lighter cars, active aerodynamics, sustainable fuels and revised power units with greater electrical output have reshaped the competitive landscape.
According to Betfair, Russell is 21/10 to win at Albert Park on March 6 to 8. Charles Leclerc follows at 4/1, with Max Verstappen priced at 9/2. Lando Norris, Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton are each 6/1, while Oscar Piastri is 10/1.
Ferrari’s late Bahrain statement has clearly influenced the market.
Ferrari quickest as Mercedes rack up mileage
Leclerc set the fastest lap of testing on the final day in Sakhir, a 1:31.992 that left him 0.8 to 0.9 clear in qualifying simulations. The SF 26 looked compliant and stable over long runs, even if winter times remain indicative rather than definitive.
Mercedes impressed in a different way. Russell completed 688 laps across the programme, underlining reliability and operational sharpness. Antonelli also caught the eye with a 1:32.803 effort, reinforcing the team’s balance and consistency.
McLaren, the defending champions, stayed firmly in the conversation. Piastri and Norris circulated in the 1:32.8 to 1:32.9 range, suggesting the papaya squad remains within striking distance under the new rules.
Red Bull showed decent form but did not headline the timing sheets, while innovation was evident elsewhere, from Ferrari’s rotating rear wing concept to Audi’s aggressive sidepod treatment. A two tier field appears to be forming.
Aston Martin odds defy troubled winter
Further down the order, Aston Martin endured a difficult Bahrain test, logging the fewest laps of any team amid reliability concerns with its Honda power unit. Yet the market has not entirely written them off. Fernando Alonso is priced at 25/1, with Lance Stroll at 66/1.
Betfair spokesperson James Mackie said: “After a strong showing in Formula 1 pre-season testing, Mercedes’ George Russell has cemented his role as the 21/10 favourite to take the chequered flag in Melbourne.
"Charles Leclerc follows closely at 4/1 after Ferrari showed good pace at the end of the Bahrain test, but eyes will be on whether Max Verstappen, currently at 9/2, can challenge for the top spot in the season opener.
“Interestingly, Aston Martin, despite a nightmare pre-season in Bahrain where reliability issues with the Honda power unit limited them to the fewest laps of any team, their odds of 25/1 for Fernando Alonso and 66/1 for Lance Stroll actually contradict the bleakest of the paddock predictions," concluded Mackie.
With thousands of laps completed and reliability broadly strong across the grid, the numbers now meet reality in Melbourne. Testing form has shifted sentiment. The stopwatch in Albert Park will decide whether the bookmakers got it right.
