The FIA has introduced an industry-first education programme aimed at tackling online abuse in sport, becoming the first governing body to launch such a resource.
The interactive module provides insights into the various forms of online abuse, its impact on individuals and society, and the legal frameworks available to counter it. FIA Member Clubs worldwide will have access to the course, which features engaging content tailored to support professional development and online safety awareness. Participants who complete the module will receive an official certification from FIA University.
The initiative, developed as part of the United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) campaign, is designed to build digital resilience among competitors, officials, and sporting organisations.
FIA President and UAOA Founder Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “The launch of this education module marks a significant milestone for the FIA, UAOA, and FIA University in our mission to promote continuous learning and professional development across FIA Member Clubs. I’m proud to lead the first sporting governing body to launch such an important resource.
“Through United Against Online Abuse, the FIA and the motorsport community is taking the lead in tackling online abuse across the sporting world. This initiative is a crucial resource to educate individuals on the risks of digital harassment and how they can enhance their online safety and resilience. I strongly encourage all FIA member clubs to complete this course and be part of the fight against online abuse," added Ben Sulayem.
Rising concerns over online abuse in sport
The United Against Online Abuse 2025 Barometer revealed that 89% of sporting federations believe governing bodies are under growing pressure to protect athletes from online abuse. The FIA’s new online learning module reinforces its commitment to education and action, equipping motorsport clubs with the tools to recognise, report, and respond to digital harassment effectively.
The module is available via the FIAU E-Learning platform, allowing clubs to enrol at their convenience. Covering topics such as legal implications, key challenges, and strategies for managing online abuse, the course sets a new benchmark in digital safety education.
Launched in 2023, UAOA has gained international backing from sports federations, national governments, and regulatory bodies. The coalition has spearheaded research and global campaigns promoting safer digital spaces.
To date, UAOA has received endorsements from the governments of Greece, France, Slovenia, Albania, Australia, Kenya, Costa Rica, Namibia, and Rwanda, alongside organisations such as FIM, the International Esports Federation, ASETEK SimSports, Peace and Sport Monaco, UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and Arwen.AI.
In 2024, the FIA was awarded Peace and Sport’s Coalition for Peace Award, presented to Ben Sulayem by Prince Albert II of Monaco in recognition of UAOA’s efforts in fighting online abuse.
The FIA remains committed to leading the way in safeguarding the motorsport community from digital threats through proactive education and collaboration.
