Formula 1 will crown its 2025 World Champion in Abu Dhabi on Sunday with Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri all still in the fight as the season reaches a rare three-way finale.
It is the first time since 2010 that more than two drivers remain in contention at the last race, and the showdown at Yas Marina could end the reign that began for Verstappen at the same venue in 2021, or a first title for either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri.
Norris starts the decider on 408 points, 12 clear of Verstappen and 16 ahead of Piastri, and needs only a podium to guarantee his first championship. All three have seven wins this year and all have endured costly retirements, ensuring the title fight has remained open through a season of comebacks, shocks and momentum swings.
Since the first championship in 1950, the title has gone to the final race on 31 occasions. Only nine times has the driver leading into the finale failed to seal the crown. Sebastian Vettel in 2010 and Kimi Raikkonen in 2007 are the only champions this century to overturn a deficit at the last round.
Norris title scenarios (408 points)
Norris is champion if he finishes:
• On the podium
• Fourth or fifth and Verstappen does not win
• Sixth or seventh and neither Verstappen nor Piastri wins
• Eighth with Verstappen outside the top two and no Piastri win
• Ninth with Verstappen off the podium and Piastri not winning
• Tenth or lower with Verstappen off the podium and Piastri no higher than third
Norris, who won last year’s Abu Dhabi finale from pole after losing a title fight to Verstappen, has called 2025 “an incredible season” and says McLaren’s form has given him confidence. He was 34 points behind Piastri in August but surged back into control with a late-season charge.
Verstappen title scenarios (396 points)
Verstappen is champion if:
• He wins and Norris is not on the podium
• He finishes second with Norris no higher than eighth and no Piastri win
• He finishes third with Norris ninth or lower and no Piastri win
The Dutchman, who can match Michael Schumacher with five consecutive titles, has pulled off the most dramatic recovery of the year. He was 104 points behind Piastri in late August but arrives in Abu Dhabi on the back of wins in Las Vegas and Qatar. He has also won four of the last five races at Yas Marina, though another victory will count only if Norris falters.
Piastri title scenarios (392 points)
Piastri is champion if:
• He wins and Norris finishes outside the top five
• He finishes second with Norris tenth or lower and Verstappen off the podium
Piastri led the standings from Saudi Arabia to Mexico and came close to becoming Australia’s first champion since Alan Jones, but a run of missed opportunities has left him needing a late twist in the tale. Twice this century, the driver who entered the finale in third place has emerged champion.
A Norris-Verstappen tie on points would be settled on P2s over the 24 races. Both have seven wins, and since a tie is only possible without another victory for either driver, Norris would prevail. Verstappen and Piastri cannot tie as the top two due to Norris’s points margin.
Beyond the title fight
McLaren, runaway constructors’ champions with one of the highest points totals in history, are seeking their first title double since 1998 despite recent missteps. Both cars were disqualified in Las Vegas, and strategy errors cost them dearly in Qatar.
Further down the order, Mercedes and Red Bull are duelling for second in the constructors’ standings, with Mercedes favoured due to greater depth behind their lead driver. The race also marks Yuki Tsunoda’s final start for Red Bull ahead of Isack Hadjar’s arrival, and Honda’s last outing with the team before moving to Aston Martin.
Ferrari chase a final chance to win a race in 2025, while Lewis Hamilton is at risk of ending his first season without a podium. Sauber, on the brink of becoming the works Audi team and celebrating Nico Hulkenberg’s 250th start, trail Haas by only five points. Alpine prepare for their final race with Renault engines before switching to Mercedes power, and Franco Colapinto seeks his first point.
A season of high drama now goes down to a single sunset showdown. One race, three contenders, one champion.
