Aston Martin surprised Formula 1 and the world when they decided to withdraw Lance Stroll from the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix due to pain in his wrists.

Stroll had just qualified 14th for the Spanish Grand Prix when the announcement was made, while his teammate Fernando Alonso made Q3 while being a little under one second faster in the end of the shootout.
The team cited pain in the Canadian's wrists as a result of his cycling incident back in 2023, when he had to sit out pre-season testing in Bahrain while he recovered from surgery.
Now we cannot judge whether Stroll's poor form has been due to the reported pain in his wrists, which Aston Martin claimed has been ongoing for six weeks, but let's be realistic here: Lance has never set the F1 world alight throughout his nine years in the sport despite some flashes here and there, which are outliers when his overall performance is evaluated.
Questionable on-track tactics and poor form have dominated Stroll's career, and had it not been for his father, Lawrence, bankrolling his career and even buying a team for his son to drive in, such a driver would not hold on to his seat in F1 under normal conditions.
As Aston Martin's F1 megaproject moves forward with huge investments, major signings, and ambitious targets, one can only wonder how a mediocre driver like Stroll would fit in, and there has always been doubt about Lawrence Stroll's seriousness about his F1 project if he insists on keeping his underperforming son in it.
Aston Martin—now with a state-of-the-art factory and Adrian Newey on board—has reached a pivotal point in its development as it works on its 2026 F1 car, which will be done under a major rules overhaul—chassis and power unit—with Honda joining them as their works power unit supplier.
There could be no horsing around any more... And maybe Papa Stroll has been talking to his son about the future, and while GrandPrix247's Paul Velasco suggested in his recent Outside Line that Stroll junior had other interests than racing, I would like to put forward this scenario.

The Talk

Lawrence: Lance, buddy, we need to talk...
Lance: Sure, Dad... What's up?
Lawrence: You know I love you, buddy, but this situation can't go on...
Lance: What situation, Dad?
Lawrence: Your seat at the team... I've put so much money into the team, and Adrian is building a monster car for next year, but we need two drivers delivering, and Fernando—bless his heart—can't keep doing this on his own... He needs help in the other car...
Lance: Are you kicking me out, Dad?
Lawrence: I am trying to protect your legacy, son. This team will be your inheritance, and you can't be driving...
Lance: What will people say? You're firing your own son!!
Lawrence: Don't worry, son, we'll find an honorable way out for you... Now tell me, how are those wrists of yours?
From here on, Lawrence goes on explaining to his son that Aston Martin will tell everyone his wrists are hurting and he can't drive for now, and then they slowly phase him out.
Of course the team's PR people will make sure to point out how Lance's departure is a great loss of talent both for the team and F1.
I know this may sound outlandish, but what if the wrists' story is just an exit strategy that shows Lawrence Stroll has finally decided to take the right yet tough decision?
Editor's note: The aforementioned Lawrence-Lance dialogue is a fictional one.
