David Croft has offered his thoughts on the upcoming 2025 Formula One World Championship, which he expects to be an exciting season.
The 2024 F1 season proved to be one of the closest and most enjoyable campaigns in the turbo-hybrid era, with a titanic duel for the Drivers' crown and a three-way battle for the Constructors' Championship to boot.
Despite this, Red Bull's Max Verstappen managed to
secure a fourth successive Drivers' Title, claiming the accolade with two rounds to spare. This has left many F1 fans wondering if the upcoming 2025 season will be any different.
2025 will be the final year of the current aerodynamic rule set, with a plethora of
significant regulation changes scheduled for 2026. Therefore, many teams will have reached near the top of the development curves of their cars, possibly resulting in closer performance and racing across the ten teams.
Furthermore,
five rookies will enter the sport in full-time race seats. Oliver Bearman has joined Haas along with Esteban Ocon, while Jack Doohan will partner Pierre Gasly at Alpine. Gabriel Bortoleto, Isack Hadjar and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will see the five red lights go out for the first time in F1 in Australia on March 16.
With numerous existing drivers switching to rival teams, including
Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari and Liam Lawson to Red Bull, there are a lot of unknowns going into the 2025 season. Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft has recently provided his insights on the year ahead.
An absolute classic
Speaking to media including
GRANDPRIX247 at
Autosport International 2025, Croft said: "
I know that 2025, it could go either way. Hopefully it's going to be another great season, an epic season, before the rule changes coming in 2026."I think 2025, on paper, has all the hallmarks of being an absolute classic," opined Croft.
However, the TV pundit is worried that the races themselves may have less overtakes and wheel-to-wheel action than previous years. He added: "My worry is that the teams will have developed so much that it will make following the car in front that much harder, and if that happens, then we might not get as much overtaking."
Croft concluded by sharing his hope that 2025 would see several drivers vying for podiums and race wins, including the younger drivers entering F1 for the first time. He continued: "But variety is the spice of life, as far as I'm concerned, and I want to see multiple race winners. I want to see multiple guys on the podium, and I want to see the rookies really give their opportunity to fight as well.
"The beautiful thing for me about Formula 1 is that we talk about the title a lot, but there are so many great subplots that go with it."
F1 racing action will return for the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, which commences Sunday March 16. Will we see another close-fought battle at the top of the Standings in 2025?
