Some try to suggest it was about the money, but Sebastian Vettel is adamant there were no talks about his contract extension with Ferrari at any time before they announced he was surplus to their needs.
And not long after announced that Carlos Sainz was replacing the German alongside Charles Leclerc, Seb clearly did not see that coming, but it appears his dismissal was part of the team's bigger plan under the current ruling cabal.
Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri shed light on the affair when he told New York Times, “That was not an easy call, but we gave it, as you can imagine, a lot of thought. Sebastian has added a lot of value to Ferrari, but ultimately we had to decide in terms of the longer-term future.”
Adding that having Sainz along with Leclerc in the team “was, in terms of our future plans, a better fit.”
Which confirms that Vettel did not walk as the team have tried to suggest, he was pushed. Treatment which galled even die-hard Tifosi, including their most successful team boss Luca di Montezemolo.
Seb joined Ferrari in 2014, winning 13 times in Red. His best years were in 2017 and 2018 when he finished runner-up in the F1 world championship on both occasions.
