McLaren F1 chief Zak Brown has revealed that his team's problems stem from years of mismanagement which has hampered them over the years but is confident that under his leadership they are on the road to recovery and as a result will field a stronger car next year.
In a candid interview with Mundo Deportivo, Brown opened up on the state of McLaren, "What brought us to this point? The problem this season spills over from years of inconsistent leadership, I won't blame anyone but there was a lack of focus from what was going on at board level downward."
"Purchases, mergers of companies, changes in management, changes in executive directors, and ultimately, lack of attention. That is what created the problem. What happened was that people did not have clear objectives or areas of responsibility."
Much was expected of their 2018 campaign before they realised the orange car they produced was a lemon and that the hugely expensive ditching of Honda works engines for Renault customer units was not their ticket to Formula 1 nirvana they once (long ago) owned.
Brown continued, "We created a poor car for 2018. Our company has a lot of individual talent, a hundred people who have been with us for 20 years. We have not had the correct structure. That's what we want to correct."
Last year before preseason testing Brown and his team were bullish about their prospects with Renault power. They naively targeted similarly Renault powered Red Bull while podiums if not wins were also on the script. In the end, fate decided otherwise and their season of woe is a well-told tale.
A year down the rocky road, with hard lessons learned, Brown is upbeat again, "We are now on the road to recovery."
"The spirit is good, development, teamwork, collaboration, communication and responsibilities are all going well, but until our car gets to the track, people will not be able to see the improvements we've made."
"I think this year has been the low point. We are working hard to recover but it will take a while," conceded the McLaren chief.
