Fernando Alonso defended Lewis Hamilton amid the Briton's tough weekend at Imola, saying he is driving super well, but the nature of Formula 1 these days means he's struggling with the car.

Alonso was the latest F1 personality to weigh in on the well documented difficulties besetting the seven-time World Champion's 2022 season, as he has to deal with a viciously "porpoising" Mercedes W13, and as he result had to settle for with 13th when the chequered flag was waved.
Alonso shared McLaren garage with Hamilton back in 2007, when the latter was a rookie. Despite the pair not having the best of relationships that season, as they fought bitterly ending the season level on points, but Alonso learned first hand Hamilton's caliber as a racer.
The Spaniard, however, believes it is the nature of the sport, rather than Hamilton's abilities as a driver that responsible for the latter's difficult season, as without a fast car, an F1 driver will struggle no matter how good he is.

It's Formula 1

"It's Formula 1," Alonso began. "It has been like this always. "When [Ayrton] Senna won the championships and the races, he had the fastest car.
"When I won the championship, I had the fastest car. Michael [Schumacher] had the fastest car," he went on. "Lewis broke all the records and pole positions because he had the fastest car.
"Today, Lewis is driving super well and he's P13. It's Formula 1," the two-time F1 Champion insisted.
Asked about how he felt about racing this season, with Ferrari and Red Bull seemingly the front runners with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, the Alpine driver said: "There is no race at the moment.
"It is like fighting with Lewis last year, or Verstappen. They start last and they finished on the podium still, so there is not much to fight," the 40-year-old maintained.
Alonso had to retire from the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after Haas' Mick Schumacher crashed into him at the start of the race, causing too much damage for the #14 Alpine to continue. It was the driver's second retirement this season after breaking down in Saudi Arabia's race.
