Mercedes Formula 1 Team announced a new partnership with nature-based carbon developer Chestnut Carbon to support large-scale carbon removal projects across the Southeastern United States.

As part of its sustainability strategy, the team will contribute to the restoration of degraded agricultural land into biodiverse forests. The Mercedes-Chestnut Carbon initiative will see the transformation of 200 hectares of land through the planting of over 260,000 native trees.
This effort aligns with Mercedes’ long-term carbon reduction goals while addressing the challenge of residual emissions within its operations. The forward purchase of nature-based carbon removal credits, to be delivered between 2027 and 2030, is expected to compensate for 5,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes F1 Team, emphasised the importance of the project; he said: "We are determined to lead by example in the pursuit of sustainability.
"We're excited about the growth of our sport in the United States and committed to supporting projects there as we work towards our goals.
"This collaboration is an important step in our strategy to address residual emissions in our carbon footprint. It underscores our commitment to become one of the most sustainable global sports teams," he claimed.

While the team remains focused on reducing emissions at the source, it acknowledges that some elements of its carbon footprint will require removals of the highest quality. The investment in Chestnut Carbon’s projects aligns with the Oxford Offsetting Principles and supports the development of sustainable land-use solutions.
Chestnut Carbon’s work involves restoring land previously used for monocrops and methane-intensive cattle farming. The organisation has already planted over 10 million trees, incorporating a mix of native pine and 18 hardwood species, with the goal of removing over one million tonnes of carbon by 2040.
Beyond carbon sequestration, the project will deliver broader environmental and socio-economic benefits, including improved air and water quality, enhanced biodiversity, and job creation for local communities. Seedlings will be sourced locally, and the project will employ regional experts and workers for planting and land management activities.
This initiative joins Mercedes' portfolio of nature- and tech-based carbon removal projects. By selecting a programme registered with the Gold Standard for Global Goals, the team ensures adherence to rigorous forest carbon methodologies, independent auditing, and high accountability in carbon offsetting.
