Andy Cowell, the CEO of Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, spoke about the challenges and ambitions he faces as he embarks on a mission to turn Lawrence Stroll's dream of a championship-winning team into reality.

Speaking in a candid Undercut interview titled “My First 100 Days as CEO of Aston Martin F1 Team,” Cowell reflected on the trust Stroll has placed in him, the scale of the project, and the mindset required to succeed.
Cowell said: “This is the best job I’ve ever had. We’re attempting something that’s never been done before in the history of Aston Martin, and to achieve it is going to take all our ingenuity, guile, and determination. Yes, it’s going to be tough. Yes, it’s a little bit daunting. But that’s when things get exciting.”
Cowell, who played a pivotal role in Mercedes’ dominance during the hybrid era, acknowledged the unrelenting ambition of Aston Martin’s Executive Chairman, Lawrence Stroll. “I’ve got to know Lawrence a lot better since I started; he’s fiercely passionate about Aston Martin and about making his vision for the company a reality.
“Whatever Lawrence does in life, he wants to be successful at it. He wants to win. He’s a serial winner. If you look at what Lawrence has achieved throughout his career, sooner or later success follows. That’s not by coincidence. That’s a product of his relentless drive to be the best."

Cowell: We’re talking about winning many F1 championships

“Lawrence is determined for Aston Martin to be successful in Formula One, but we’re not just talking about winning races and the championship; we’re talking about winning many championships,” Cowell explained.
Cowell emphasised that the team’s “North Star” is building a World Championship-winning organisation: “Everything we discuss relates to what is needed to make this vision a reality. My job is to work out what organisation is the right one to achieve this vision: Have we got the right structure? Have we got the right people in the right places? Have we got the right infrastructure? Is everyone pulling in the same direction and working as one cohesive unit?
“I set out the overarching targets for the executive leadership team and work with them to establish the path to reach these targets that are aimed at getting us to where we want to be. And I make sure we’re prioritising the right things and working on things in the right order.
“Lawrence has put a huge amount of trust in me to lead this team to the front of the grid. It’s very humbling and a great privilege," declared Cowell.

Cowell stressed the importance of creating an organisation that can compete for championships consistently, rather than focusing on short-term gains: This all comes down to building an organisation that’s sustainable. “Yes, you need to focus on the development of this year’s car and getting the best performance at the track.
"But it’s also about making sure that there is sufficient focus on the development of next year’s car and the car after that. You want to avoid a scenario where people are straddling multiple years because people tend to focus on immediate priorities, and future priorities end up compromised.
“It’s about investing in the future—investing in those new ideas that no one else has pursued yet and hitting those challenging targets. You need a group of people who want to climb Everest more than once—who are prepared to do whatever it takes to climb to the top and then do it all over again, and again, and again.”
While the task ahead is daunting, Cowell sees it as an opportunity to innovate: “There’s no point taking on a project that’s easy and doesn’t challenge you. If you do the same as what’s gone before or the same as what others are doing, you’ll never reach new heights, you’ll never win.
“To be truly successful, to win, you have to come up with a concept, with an approach that represents a huge performance opportunity. And if that concept is daunting, if it seems impossible to achieve and makes everyone in the organisation sit up and wonder how we are going to actually do it, then you’re on the right path.”

Cowell also revealed his strategy for fostering a culture of excellence within the team: “You need to get people to the point where they trust that those around them are doing a great job. Every time they look up to see what people are doing around them, they should be in awe of the work that their colleagues are doing.
“I want our people to think beyond the norm, to think creatively about the ways we can always improve on what we’re doing—that’s ultimately how we will end up being pioneers. At no point can you ever think you’re perfect. If I ever say, ‘that’s perfection,’ then that’s the time to kick me out the door, that’s time for me to retire," reckoned Cowell.
With F1's most successful designer/engineer Adrian Newey now on board, Fernando Alonso in one car, and Lance Stroll in the other for now, Aston Martin is assembling the resources to challenge Formula One’s elite. As Cowell’s first 100 days at the helm conclude, the focus is firmly on delivering Lawrence Stroll’s grand vision.
Whether Aston Martin can become a championship-winning team remains to be seen, but with Cowell at the helm, the journey promises to be as ambitious as it is exciting.
Time will tell if Max Verstappen will become the first billion-dollar man in F1 as billionaire team-owner Stroll senior has Red Bull's four-time F1 world champion on his radar it seems, hence pressure on Cowell to put the winning pieces together for Aston Martin, anything less won't interest the Dutch ace.
