Las Vegas never disappoints, but this year it delivered a title-shaking shockwave. The weekend looked set to be another polished Lando Norris masterclass.
The McLaren driver handled tricky qualifying conditions beautifully while others faltered. Alex Albon even stuck his Williams in the wall. Oscar Piastri had the pace but was hampered by a yellow flag on his final Q3 run, which opened the door for Norris to take pole and control the narrative.
Max Verstappen was lurking, though, lining up second and never more than a heartbeat away from seizing an opportunity. As he did on the night.
At the start of the
third running of the modern era Las Vegas Grand Prix, a small mistake sent Norris wide into Turn 1, and Verstappen needed no second invitation. He grabbed the lead immediately and never let it go, marching to victory and banking the full twenty-five points. It looked like a standard Verstappen ambush. What followed was anything but standard.
Because the biggest twist of the weekend came after the race, not during it.
All roads lead to an explosive Abu Dhabi finale
Both McLarens were disqualified for excessive plank wear, wiping their points completely. Just like that, the title fight detonated. Verstappen is now level on points with Piastri, and Norris’s
once-comfortable advantage has shrunk to a 24-point safety net with two races to go.
A single DNF in Qatar could hand Verstappen a shot at clinching his fifth Formula 1 championship at the Abu Dhabi season finale. For a season that looked wrapped up weeks ago, we suddenly have a thriller.
Qatar and Abu Dhabi are now must-see Grand Prix weekends. If it goes down to the final night at Yas Marina, buy your tickets, sell your house, beg, borrow, or barter! It could be the most dramatic final round we’ve seen in years.
Can Norris hold his nerve when it matters most? Can Piastri respond to Verstappen’s charge, or is he destined for third in the standings? Because let’s be honest: no one remembers second or third. They remember the champion.
Formula 1 has thrown the cards in the air. Now we wait to see where they land.
