Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been disqualified from the results of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, changing the complexion of the Title fight.
The McLaren cars were checked by the
FIA after the 50-lap event, and it was found that both MCL39's rearmost skid planks measured in at less than 9mm thickness. This was illegal according to the rulebooks, prompting the governing body to investigate the team after the race.
The decision was a simple one, not dissimilar to when both Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, were disqualified from this year's Chinese Grand Prix for an almost identical infringement.
With both McLaren cars out of the results, the Mercedes pair of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli have taken up the two remaining spots on the podium. Max Verstappen won the Grand Prix in dominant style, over 20 seconds ahead of Norris
who crossed the line in P2.
What this means for the Championship
With both McLarens therefore failing to score points in Las Vegas, the three-way battle between Norris, Piastri and Verstappen has heated up considerably with two rounds remaining.
Norris still leads the Standings on 390 points, but now Piastri and Verstappen are tied on points and closer to the leader the previously, on 366 points. With 58 points on offer in the the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix combined, this deficit could easily be overturned.
It's all to play for as the 2025 season draws closer to its conclusion. The Qatar Grand Prix commences Sunday 30 November at 16:00 GMT (19:00 local time).
