Lando Norris winning the 2024 Miami Grand Prix was heralded by his Formula 1 rivals, and without fail his peers were quick to congratulate the McLaren driver with bear hugs in Parc Ferme immediately after the race and later praising his feat.

On the occasion of his 110th Grand Prix, Norris finally broke his hoodoo, to claim his first win on merit. While he did benefit from the Safety Car, he was without doubt the quickest driver in the field on Sunday. Even Max Verstappen had no answer for the Briton when it mattered.

On the restart into Turn 1, Norris did well to fend off the Red Bull driver, who had controlled the race until the Safety Car was deployed and thereafter edged ahead to win the race by seven seconds over the World Champion.

After the show of affection immediately after the race, the plaudits from Norris’ rivals – drivers, F1 team bosses and beyond – continued after the race in Miami.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull: “I’m very happy for Lando. It’s been a long time coming and it’s not going to be his last one, so he definitely deserves it today.

“Once they switched onto the hard tyre, they just had more pace, and especially Lando, he was flying. It was incredibly difficult for us on that stint, but if a bad day is P2, I take it,” Verstappen added.

George Russell, Mercedes: “A massive well done to Lando and McLaren. He truly deserves it, and all told, he probably deserves to have more than one victory already by now. We’ve been racing each other for a long time; he’s put so much hard work in, and I had no doubts that he would win in F1. I’m very happy for him.”

Toto Wolff, Mercedes: “A massive well done to Lando and McLaren. He truly deserves it, and all told, he probably deserves to have more than one victory already by now. We’ve been racing each other for a long time; he’s put so much hard work in, and I had no doubts that he would win in F1. I’m very happy for him.”

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin: “I am happy for Lando. It’s always special to secure your first win.”

Daniel Ricciardo, VCARB: “I’m genuinely happy for Lando, big congratulations to him, he is a rival but also a friend. I know how talented he is and I knew it was just a matter of time for him to take his first win.”

Mystic Carlos Sainz and his in-race prediction that came true for 'deserving' rival

Carlos Sainz, Ferrari: “He deserves it for such a long time to win a race. He’s a driver that will win many races in F1. He’s been driving at an exceptional level. Today he was on the lucky side but luck comes to people who deserve it and today he definitely deserves it.”

Fred Vasseur: “First of all I want to congratulate Lando and McLaren because it’s a first win for a driver who is very popular in the paddock and we are happy for him. It was also a good result for Formula 1 as a whole.”

Jenson Button, 2009 F1 World Champion: “We saw the pace when he was catching Sainz, very impressive. Obviously, the Safety Car helped a bit but he was in the fight anyway. I’m very proud of him. It’s been a long time coming. Lovely to see him on the top step. Lando didn’t make any mistakes. ”

Beyond the F1 world, Norris impressed former Indycar and NACAR driver turned occasional TV pundit Danica Patrick: “So much talent. He has the personality of a champion. He has confidence. He’s fast, he’s funny. You just get a feeling that someday he will win a championship.

“I’m sure it will feel so sweet after the lows and highs of the last couple races. It’s been up and down, so to see him put it together, and that smile on his face, he’s going to be famous in McLaren for a long time,” reckoned Patrick.

Oscar Piastri, McLaren: “A great day for the team. Well done to Lando and everyone at McLaren. The race was won on merit today and it’s really promising for what’s to come.”

Team Principal Andrea Stella: “Most important is the victory for Lando because he deserves it SO much. We have always said, as soon as we give him the right material, he will make it and he made it.

“I know what kind of work is behind this. It’s so deserved for the McLaren team. I hope everyone enjoys this moment. This victory is for Gil de Ferran.”

McLaren CEO, Zak Brown: This is long overdue. This is a very popular win amongst the fans, the drivers – so many drivers went up to him and congratulated him. He drove perfectly and the car was very fast.

“A lot of credit to the leadership team. Andrea, Stella I couldn’t ask for a better team principal. He listens, he communicates, he’s thoughtful, he’s hard-working and demanding. That’s how everyone is at the factory. It’s all starting to come together,” declared Brown, savouring his McLaren team’s second GP victory under his watch.
