Williams rookie George Russell has praised his crew after completing a promising 119-lap day in the troublesome FW42 at Formula 1 preseason testing at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Russell was ninth fastest on day five of testing with a lap time of 1:19.662 on the band-less C5 tyre compound, the fastest tyre available in the Pirelli range.
Despite missing the first two days of testing last week – due to a delayed finish on the car – Williams have quickly adapted to their new machinery on track as they prepare for the season-opening Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 on March 14-17.
“It was a good day,” said Russell, who will make his F1 debut in Melbourne. “Our plan was to get as many laps on the board, make sure we had no issues, and that’s exactly what we did.
“We have learnt so much about the car on lower fuel and higher fuel which gives us a good indication moving forward into the next few days. All in all, it was a huge relief to have a day like today, and we completed our test plan as intended.”
Russell’s teammate Robert Kubica steps into the car on Wednesday when testing continus at the Circuit de Catalunya.
