Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel got his Belgian Grand Prix weekend to strong start, topping the timing screens at the end of the 9o-minutes session fastest of all, with the top five drivers separated by less than four-tenths of a second.
Vettel's best lap time of 1:44.358, around the daunting Spa-Francorchamps, was a tenth and a bit faster than Red Bull's Max Verstappen in second place.
A tenth further down was Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton in third and Kimi Raikkonen fourth in the other Ferrari, sandwiched by Valterri Bottas fifth in the other Mercedes.
Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was sixth fastest as the Big Three teams hogged the sharp end of the timing sheets.
Best of the Rest (Formula 1.5!) was the Force India of Esteban Ocon albeit 1.6 seconds shy of the top pace. Nico Hulkenberg was next up in the Renault, followed by Sergio Perez in the Force India and Carlos Sainz rounding out the top ten in the Renault.
Lando Norris was on duty in Fernando Alonso's McLaren, the youngster being evaluated for a place in the F1 grid next year with the Woking outfit.
The British 18-year-old had a solid session, ticking all the boxes on the way to setting the 18th best time, faster than teammate Stoffel Vandoorne who did only 13 laps compared to Norris’s 26, however, the local driver kept in the garage as the team investigated a possible leak on the car.
