The Williams that Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll have at their disposal this season is so bad that team chief Claire Williams believes not even Lewis Hamilton would make a difference if he were driving for the team.
Ther Willimas FW41, the first car built under technical chief Paddy Lowe's watch, is the worst car ever produced at Grove
which at one point pumped out title-winning cars on a regular basis. Those days are well and truly over.
Williams has previously described the FW$1 as 'evil' and now she believes that not even four times F1 World Champion and winner of 66 grands prix would make a difference were he to be in the cockpit.
She told BBC, "Put Lewis in our car, and I'm not sure he could have made a huge amount of difference. I feel sorry for Lance and Sergey. The car just doesn't have the performance."
Statistics don't lie, and although of late the team have extracted some pace from the car that has helped the drivers, the qualifying average put Williams 0.4 of a second behind Sauber, 0.5 off Toro Rosso and 0.7 off McLaren.
The team's plight is not helped by the fact that their drivers are too inexperienced to help them out of the rut they are in, while their 'experienced' test driver Robert Kubica has made little difference to their plight.
Williams said, "Lance and Sergey are young but there is often criticism of teams for not nurturing young talent. They have had an enormous amount of criticism levelled at them, and that is somewhat unfair."
"They have not been able to show the talent they do have and we wouldn't put drivers in the car if we didn't think they had some talent. I don't think any driver could have made that much difference to our performance," added the daughter of Sir Frank Williams.
