Last year at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo was punted out by his Red Bull teammate on the opening lap, this time around the Australian believes he has a race winning car at his disposal and he intends to make the most of it in qualifying and on race day.
Speaking to journos after the first day of practice at Hungaroring, Ricciardo declared, “I want to be on the front row, I want to win. We’ve got a good enough car. On one lap, we can still make some adjustments. On long runs, it’s all very close."
“I predicted the top six will be close this weekend and I think come tomorrow it will be. Seb did a good lap [in FP2] and we know [Ferrari] are quick on Saturdays. There’s still a bit of time to find on one lap, but… it was a good start, a good day, so I’m happy.”
Red Bull have a good opportunity for a good result in Hungary around the race track that is often described as Monaco without the yachts, the tight nature of the track favours the RB14 as they do not have to depend so much on their Renault power unit that at this stage of the season is lagging behind pacesetter Ferrari and Mercedes.
Ricciardo explained, “We lose a lot on the straight unfortunately, so we have to work even more on our car to try and get a bit more of an advantage. I think we can still gain a bit more out of the car, but the long run pace looks good and we’re all very close."
"I think both of the tyres (ultrasoft and soft) performed quite well today and even in the long runs they were holding up alright," added Ricciardo who finished the day third fastest, a couple of tenths down on the top time of the day set by Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari.
