Red Bull arrived in the Principality expecting another difficult weekend, yet by the end of Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying they found themselves back where they belong, fighting at the very front.
The streets of Monte Carlo produced a grid headed by three generational talents. Lewis Hamilton, enjoying a remarkable resurgence in the latter stages of his Formula 1 career. Kimi Antonelli, the teenage sensation who continues to rewrite expectations. And Max Verstappen, still the benchmark against which every driver is measured.
The Dutch ace ultimately missed pole by just 0.043 seconds, securing second place on the grid and giving Red Bull its strongest Qualifying result of the season. After climbing from the car, Verstappen admitted the result exceeded expectations: "I am really happy with my performance.
"If you had told me yesterday that we would be on the front row, I would have definitely taken it! It was a bit of a surprise as this morning I think we had a few difficulties with the car, so ending up on the front row I think was extremely positive."
Verstappen explained that mastering the current generation of Formula 1 cars remains a challenge: "The cars are a bit more on edge than the last few years. When the power kicks in, as well as drivability and shifts, it’s all a bit different.
"When you get a clean lap and can go flat out on the limit, it feels great and very rewarding. This is the most important session of the weekend and I am happy to be where we are. I’m very happy with how all the laps went, even though you have to deal with all the traffic and the walls," he added.
With overtaking notoriously difficult around Monaco, Verstappen knows Sunday presents a genuine opportunity to challenge Antonelli for victory: "It is critical to get the start right, it can get a bit complicated and I have two cars behind me that start quite well, so let’s see. A lot can happen so it’s all to play for."
Hadjar continues to impress
The Red Bull camp had even more reason to celebrate thanks to Isack Hadjar's outstanding fifth place for Racing Bulls. The Frenchman endured a difficult Friday after crashing during practice, leaving both himself and the team with plenty of work to do overnight. However, he responded superbly when it mattered most.
Reflecting on his recovery, Hadjar said: "I’m definitely satisfied with that result. After yesterday, there was a lot to do, both with the car and with my confidence, but I just took it step by step with each lap."
Despite some early challenges, the 21-year-old found pace throughout the Qualifying hour: "We struggled a little in Q1 with traffic and the tyres, but made a big step in Q2 and another in Q3. The car was fast around here, and we knew the track was going to suit us, so I just wish I’d had a smoother lead-up to today."
Starting P5 places Hadjar firmly in the mix for a strong points haul on Sunday: "I’m still happy with fifth; hopefully the pack will be tight tomorrow and we can make some overtakes with a strong strategy."
Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies was fired up by the result: "This is a great result for the Team and a clear step forward in terms of performance, if you look at where we were two or three races ago. We can be very proud of the job done by everyone back in Milton Keynes and at the race track."
Mekies sees clear progress
Although pleased, Mekies admitted pole position slipping away by such a narrow margin left some frustration: "Of course, we can never be completely happy, missing Pole by four hundredths, especially in Monaco but it’s a great result for the Team with a few fantastic laps from Max to get us to the front row, and with Isack in P5."
The Frenchman revealed Red Bull had feared it had lost ground during final practice before successfully recovering ahead of Qualifying: "So far this weekend, it has been very tight between the four teams at the front and even though we looked strong on Friday, this morning, others were clearly much faster than us.
"In FP3, we felt we had lost some performance compared to yesterday, but we were able to put the car in a better window in time for Qualifying. The key will be to get a good start, which we know is proving tricky this year, for some of us out there. Can we win? There is always the belief in the Team that we can," Mekies added.
For the first time this season, Red Bull heads into Sunday with both confidence and genuine hope. Thanks to Verstappen's brilliance and Hadjar's continued rise, the team is finally back at the sharp end. A least on the streets of Monte Carlo for now.
