Red Bull's Isack Hadjar crashed heavily during first practice for the Monaco Grand Prix on Friday, triggering a red flag with less than 25 minutes remaining and leaving his team facing a major repair job ahead of the second session.
The French driver hit the barriers at Turn 16 on the exit of the Swimming Pool section after appearing to lose control of his RB22. The car made initial contact with the barrier before sliding through the chicane and striking the wall again in an unusual sequence of impacts.
The collision sent the damaged car back across the circuit and scattered debris across the track, forcing race control to halt the session.
Hadjar emerged unhurt and immediately reported his confusion over team radio: "Yeah [I'm fine] but I don't understand why it snapped off like that. I'm sorry."
The 21-year-old later walked back to the Red Bull garage while mechanics assessed the damage. Speaking with engineers, Hadjar appeared unsure about the cause of the accident and continued to question what had triggered the sudden loss of control.
The crash came at one of the most demanding sections of the Monaco street circuit, where drivers brush the barriers while searching for lap time around the narrow and unforgiving layout.
Red Bull now faces a race against time to repair the car before second practice later on Friday.
At the time of the stoppage, Mercedes
championship leader Kimi Antonelli was fastest on the timesheets as teams continued preparations for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.
