Ferrari emerged as the team to beat at the Monaco Grand Prix, but Charles Leclerc believes the fight for pole position is shaping up as a three way battle between himself, team mate Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

On Friday, Leclerc topped the opening practice session on home soil before Hamilton struck back in FP2, the seven time World Champion edging his Ferrari team mate by just 0.111 seconds. Verstappen remained firmly in contention for Red Bull, leaving less than two tenths covering the leading trio.
For Leclerc, however, the headline pace masked an underlying problem. The Monegasque admitted he spent much of Friday wrestling with brake issues that prevented him from extracting the confidence needed around Formula 1’s most unforgiving circuit.
Leclerc said: “We’re facing quite a few issues on the brakes on my side, so we’re trying to fix those. The confidence is not at the highest level at the moment.
“Apart from that, it’s a track I love, and I’m sure that if we manage to fix those for tomorrow, it will be a good step forward. Unfortunately, it’s been since Canada that I’m struggling a little bit on that.
“We’re trying to find solutions, I hope we do for tomorrow, and if so I don’t doubt that we will do a step forward.”
Despite those concerns, Ferrari’s outright speed left Leclerc optimistic about his chances heading into Saturday’s all important qualifying session.

Leclerc expects Hamilton and Verstappen challenge

Monaco qualifying often decides the race outcome, making pole position arguably more valuable here than anywhere else on the calendar. Leclerc expects a fierce battle.
Leclerc pointed out: “Max has been very strong, Red Bull have been very strong, and Lewis has been very strong as well. At the end of the day, it’s not been a disastrous day.
"We were very close to Lewis in FP2, so I’m not so worried, but it’s going to be a tough Qualifying. For sure, it’s going to be very tight. If we do a step forward with the brakes, surely it can help us for the fight for pole," Leclerc added.
Hamilton’s strong showing continued a recent upward trend after a difficult start to life at Ferrari. The Briton looked increasingly comfortable throughout Friday and appears to have established himself as a genuine contender for pole position.
That prospect has only intensified speculation that Ferrari could lock out the front row, particularly on a circuit where mechanical grip and driver confidence are often more important than outright aerodynamic efficiency.
Yet Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur remains reluctant to read too much into Friday’s timesheets.

Vasseur urges caution despite Ferrari pace

While rivals and observers increasingly view Ferrari as Monaco favourites, Vasseur warned that Friday performance means little if teams fail to stay ahead of the rapidly evolving circuit conditions.
Vasseur said: “I don’t care about this kind of approach or rumours. We have to do the job. It’s a very long way in Monaco from Friday, first to the quali, then to the race.
“The most difficult thing is that you have to anticipate the evolution of the track, the evolution of the grip, and you have to be always one session ahead. This is a real challenge for the team and for the drivers.
“It means that it’s still a long way to go, and we’ll see tomorrow evening after Qualifying about the real pace.”
The Frenchman also welcomed Hamilton’s improving form, believing it strengthens Ferrari’s chances across the weekend.
Vasseur said: “For sure, it’s important, and it’s important for the competitiveness of the team. The momentum is good, but most important is that the momentum will be good tomorrow evening.”
Friday suggested Ferrari hold a slight advantage, but Monaco rarely follows the script. If Leclerc resolves his brake issues, Hamilton maintains his momentum and Verstappen finds a little more pace, Saturday’s qualifying session could produce one of the closest pole fights of the season.
