Alex Zanardi believes that Lewis Hamilton has one hand on the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship title as his archrival Sebastian Vettel fumbles the best opportunity he has ever had to be champion with Ferrari.
Vettel did not make the most of an apparently superior package for the Singapore Grand Prix, while Hamilton dug deep by delivering a stellar pole-winning lap in qualifying and then powered to victory unchallenged.
Vettel was second at one point in the night race, but the Reds messed up the maths and by the end of the race the #5 Ferrari was a distant third. The German now trails Hamilton in the championship standings by 40-points with six rounds remaining.
After Singapore, Zanardi told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he believes the title race is over, "It was only one race but it summed up the state of play this season. After Monza, everyone had the impression that a victory would put things back on track."
"But Lewis drove everyone into the ground with a perfect, almost poetic performance. You could see on Seb's face [after the race] that the balance of power had shifted."
"It does not help Ferrari complaining about the time spent behind [Sergio] Perez or because Vettel's brakes were hot. In that case, maybe it can then be blamed on him hitting the wall in practice, another blot on his weekend."
"Mathematically Ferrari can keep on believing but the truth is that Hamilton is dominating," added Zanardi.
