Toto Wolff believes his Mercedes team are inching closer to victory, their first of 2022 after a below-par start to their Formula 1 season, the goal is to challenge Ferrari and Red Bull for wins in the remaining nine races.
Mercedes made a meal of the first half of this year, but have gradually clawed their way back with Lewis Hamilton finding good form again and Mr Consistency, George Russell delivering with the non-winning package they have.
Apart from not winning a race after 14 rounds, the first time since 2012,
reigning F1 constructors' champions Mercedes are third in the championship standings but a massive 127 points behind Red Bull and 30 adrift of Ferrari.
Speaking ahead of Round 14 of 2022, Wolff summarised where his team stands ahead of Spa-Francorchamps: "We headed into the break off the back of a strong run of races and our biggest race weekend points score so far this year, in Hungary.
"While we're still not quite in the fight for victories, we're getting closer, so we need to keep the momentum going and the pressure on."
The summer months are a much-needed break for constantly travelling F1 teams and staff, which Wolff acknowledged: The shutdown is an important time for the team to take some time off, recharge and spend time with their families, whose support throughout the year is invaluable.
"There are few opportunities to do so during the season and the development race is relentless, so the break has been well deserved for everyone in the team."
Belgium has been a reasonably happy hunting ground for Mercedes who have won there four times since 2015 and this year marks the final leg of this intriguing championship
"We're set for an intense second half of the season, with nine more opportunities to find improvements, make progress and hopefully challenge Red Bull and Ferrari for wins," concluded Wolff.
